  • I like Chris Peterson myself, but slating him into a HC position in a major conference would require some scrutiny.

Boise State Recruit Rankings the past 7 years, per rivals.com

    2013 - 68th (to this point)
    2012 - 54th
    2011 - 53rd
    2010 - 82nd
    2009 - 72nd
    2008 - 89th
    2007 - 68th

Now, you can look at this a several ways.

First off, BSU has been quite successful over the past 7 years with recruiting classes that would not pass muster at BCS conference schools. You can either attribute BSU's success to an excellent job of player development by CP and his staff, or you can question the caliber of schedule BSU typically has to deal with. Probably a bit of both, but I would tend to favor the latter.

You can get by quite well with well coached, average talent when you don't face the rigors of a major conference schedule. BSU might be the best coached team in America, but put them in the Big XII, Pac 12, or SEC, and they would likely be a 3-4 loss team in conference every year.

CP could land at a Wisconsin or Nebraska and it would figure he's have access to a better class of athlete in terms of recruiting, but to this point, there is no indicator that he would succeed in landing the type of players you need to compete week to week in a major conference.

Look at all the talk on this board about our recruiting; constant dissection of the "who and where" and the need to have a top 15 recruiting class if we really want to compete in the B1G and nationally. Do you think that CP is such a good coach that he would succeed at a B1G school when his average recruiting class is ranked 65th in the country?

I see Chris Peterson as a bit of a dichotomy; obviously successful where he's been, but not necessarily a guy who's going to succeed greatly in the grind of major conference football.

I don't think he wants to leave Boise anyway. Guess we'll see in a few days.
