  • Michael Jordan should be mentioned. Tiger? Walter Payton? Gretzky? Bo Knows?

    Who you got?

  • Herschel Walker?

    Kevin Ryan

  • Bo Jackson.

Guy was a man for the Royals, and was a man for the Raiders.

    Everybody wanted more.

No doubt the best the athlete I have ever seen in my life.

Jim Brown. Not a lot of people know he was also a world-class lacrosse player.

    IDWIW

  • Jordan best individual player of any sport IMO.

Hard to argue Bo Jackson as best athlete.

Bo Jackson was a world class baseball player.

He played both sports in the NFL and MLB.

He was All-Pro in both sports,

Why are you stating this information that I know already? He asked who we thought was the best athlete. You stated your case and I'll state mine. Jim Brown was one of the greatest running backs of all time. All-American lacrosse player. Lettered in basketball as well at Syracuse. Finished fifth in the '56 decathlon. Offered a minor league deal with the Yankees and he could have probably been a professional boxer if he chose after football. Still don't understand why you replied to my post.

    Because you replied to mine?

Get a grip. A serious grip.

I made a comment to the original thread.

YOU responded personally to my response.

    I stated some other FACTS.

You then resonded with the crapness above and that I'll requote here:

"Why are you stating this information that I know already? He asked who we thought was the best athlete. You stated your case and I'll state mine. What is your problem?

    Skerz

  • First off I apologize. I didn't mean to reply to your post. That isn't crap that I posted. Just info that I think helps determine he was one hell of an athlete. I have no problem with you bud, chill out.

  • Deion Sanders deserves a mention, imho.

  • JIM THORPE.

It's really impossible to claim that one athlete could ever hold such a distinction, especially when different sports and eras are being considered. But, playing along (and limiting it to Americans that I am familiar with)... it is Jim Thorpe.

Thorpe was an amazingly versatile and accomplished athlete. He won several Olympic gold medals in multi-event fields, played professional football (multiple positions), baseball and basketball. He was a champion ballroom dancer and also a lacrosse player.

The others mentioned here are great, but they don't surpass Thorpe's overall athletic skills.

Beat me to it. Jim Thorpe would be my #1 followed closely by Bo and then a sizable gap to #3, which would probably Jim Brown.

    Chill out? Bud?

    Now I'm really confused.

You didn't mean to respond to my post but yet put my original post in your reply and respond exactly to what I said.

You make the following snide remarks:

"Why are you stating this information that I know already?", and "Still don't understand why you replied to my post."

I quote your remarks and ask what is your problem.

You then tell me to 'chill out' and call me 'bud'. Interesting.

    Skerz

  • Skerz and SnC, let's stay with the topic. No need to continue the side conversation. Thanks, guys.

As for OP, I gotta go with Bo too. The man was a beast.

  • Dave Winfield? Groups have been drafted in three sports.

What about Bob Gibson? Heckuva basketball player and the baseball speaks for itself.

Bo Jackson deserves some consideration as well

  • Jim Thorpe won the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon, was an All-American in football for the Carlisle Indians in 1911 and 1912, played pro baseball first for the New York Giants and football with the Canton Bulldogs, also barnstorming with the LaRue Indians in basketball.

Only one person can come close to those accomplishments:

Babe Didrickson won 10 professional gold championships, including three Women's Opens, was an All-American in basketball and T&F, with two golds and a silver at the 1932 Olympics. Competed in AAU basketball, played semi-pro baseball with the House of David. She qualified for the PGA Tour, and after her first year on the Tour never failed to make a cut.

Representing her company in the 1932 AAU T&F Championships, she competed in eight out of ten events, winning six events and setting five world records in the process, and winning the team championship as the only member of her team.

Jim Brown was an AA in football and LaCrosse at Syracuse.

Jackie Robinson was an AA in football for UCLA before moving on to professional baseball.

Bob Gibson was a starter for Creighton in both baseball and basketball.

Kirk Gibson earned some AA honors as a football player for Michigan State before going on to play pro baseball for Detroit and later the Dodgers.

Bo Jackson played both pro football and baseball.

  • I would add the young Muhammad Ali/Cassius Clay. Quickest reflexes of any fighter at any weight. In his early fights no one could hit him.

I would also add Wilt Chamberlain. His combination of size, strength and endurance have never been matched.

Kinda glad you brought this up ECH. I was wondering if anyone would give LeBron some props. Sure, he's had his fair share of public criticism, but as an an athlete? Pretty impressive.

LeBron certainly could have been a great track and field athlete in addition to a great basketball player. I think it is a little too early to judge him in an historical context, but he certainly has exceptional athletic ability.

Wilt was a pretty good miler and high jumper in his day. Definitely a freak athlete.
