Why are you stating this information that I know already? He asked who we thought was the best athlete. You stated your case and I'll state mine. Jim Brown was one of the greatest running backs of all time. All-American lacrosse player. Lettered in basketball as well at Syracuse. Finished fifth in the '56 decathlon. Offered a minor league deal with the Yankees and he could have probably been a professional boxer if he chose after football. Still don't understand why you replied to my post.

JIM THORPE.
It's really impossible to claim that one athlete could ever hold such a distinction, especially when different sports and eras are being considered. But, playing along (and limiting it to Americans that I am familiar with)... it is Jim Thorpe.
Thorpe was an amazingly versatile and accomplished athlete. He won several Olympic gold medals in multi-event fields, played professional football (multiple positions), baseball and basketball. He was a champion ballroom dancer and also a lacrosse player.
The others mentioned here are great, but they don't surpass Thorpe's overall athletic skills.

LeBron certainly could have been a great track and field athlete in addition to a great basketball player. I think it is a little too early to judge him in an historical context, but he certainly has exceptional athletic ability.
