I think this negativity is actually realism. Bo's teams have not handled success well. We all remember the debacle against Northwestern last season after taking control of the division as well as the debacle at Michigan. The way to tell if this team is truly different is if they come out and are ready to play from minute one in this game. Makes me uneasy as well, but if we win this game I honestly don't see us dropping any of the final three games (though PSU could be a trap type game).

I came away from the UCLA game convinced that this team had marginal talent on D, particularly in the front 7. That was reinforced by the Ohio State game.

I did see some improvement against Northwestern in that group's play and there was remarkable improvement against Michigan. Now, of course, UCLA and Ohio State both have some quick guys that are going to make you miss in the open field and Northwestern and Michigan (particularly after Robinson went down) don't have those types of players. Nonetheless we showed much better field balance and gang tackling in our front 7, particularly in the Michigan game.

Michigan State doesn't even try to make you miss. They try to steam roll you. Even their TE's are built like OL's.

This is the type of O that is perfectly suited for our D to excel against. Guys like Sean Fisher and Alonzo Whaley, who are less suited to open field situations are actually well-suited to play this kind of team. We do have a lot of grit and toughness in our DL and LB's and it will come to the fore in this game. Michigan State's passing attack is a notch below Wisconsin's (with Stave), so I think if out DB's, particularly SJB, play as well as they did against Michigan we will contain them there.

OTOH, I can't see our O having a great day against their D. Their D is huge, like their O, but they are also quick and very, very physical. Taylor, of course, will have to have a very good game. Our North-South running game will not be effective, but our OL's do pull and block on the edge well, so maybe Abullah will find some running room there, but I do think the key is for Taylor to run the ball well. If we are able to run some, I think our play-action passing game will set up o.k.

I see this being a very low scoring game. It may be that Maher is our most important player outside of Taylor. He will have to punt consistently well and make FG's when he has the opportunity.

I figure we win, but it will be something like 13-10. IF, and this is a pretty big IF, SJB is able to pick off a pass or two and we win the turnover "battle", it could open up a bit, but we have not won the turnover battle in many games. Here's hoping.

Well said, I know it's a cop out, but the only team that can beat us tomorrow is ourselves. Slow and steady should do it, IMO. Give Abdullah and Heard a lot of carries and let Martinez take advantage when he can.

If it makes you feel any better, MSU doesn't know the meaning of a hot start.

I believe we were up 7-0 against Iowa in the 1st. Thats as close to a hot start this offense has seen

That's funny, UV for you. We were in the same boat in 2009, we played O like we were petrified of crossing the goal line, like the endzone was full of zombies. But, the D kept us in every game.

Defensive score/big special teams plays that set the O up for good field position is about all I can think of. MSU has scored 2 TDs in regulation just once this Big 10 season (vs. IU).

    The D is legit though.
