ESPN has a great mobile site and they have an app. I don't see how people are offended by the demand for an app. Nobody would be put out of work by it.

An app can do a lot more than a website.
Push notifications could be used for private messages, commits, big news, etc.
It could also be a lot smoother (gestures, animations)
