We have an Iowa fan fielding rivalry questions...

"yeah... how mad are you at your running back situation? I can't believe the luck (or lack there of) you guys have at that position. And how do you feel about new offensive and defensive coordinators?"

just to add to that can you elaborate on the running backs leaving? I am not sure what is fact and/or speculation from all the stuff ive heard..

Thanks... look forward to conversations. He should feel free to ask any questions of us as well. We're usually a friendly bunch.

This is a summary one of our posters found on one of their old sites:

Damien Sims is the only RB.....
in the KF era to make it a full four years without ever missing time.

Here is the full list of RBs during the KF era, by year and the result:

2002 - Aaron Greving - Injured, quits team
2002 - Justice Hariston - fails to qualify

2003 - Jermelle Lewis - tears ACL for first time
    2003 - Albert Young - tears ACL
2003 - AJ Johnson - Lasts 1 semester before being kicked off team

2004 - Shonn Green - fails to qualify
2004 - Fred Russell - Leaves early for NFL
    2004 - Jermelle Lewis - 2nd ACL tear
    2004 - Marcus Schnoor - tears ACL
    2004 - Champ Davis - tears ACL

2005 - AIRBHG tricked when Damien Sims briefly moves to cornerback - is only Iowa running back in KF era to make it 4 years and graduate with no lost time.

2006 - Kalvin Bailey - flunks out after one year
2006 - Corey Robertson - flunks out after one year

2007 - Shonn Greene - flunks out and heads to Kirkwood to move furniture
2007 - Dana Brown - beats up girlfriend and kicked off team

2008 - Jevon Pugh - leaves after one year - Everson stink clings to him
2008 - Jeff Brinson - injures knee and redshirts
2008 - Nate Guillory - leaves one week into fall camp

2009 - Shonn Greene - leaves early for NFL
2009 - Jewel Hampton - tears ACL in fall camp
2009 - Jeff Brinson - injured after one carry
2009 - D'Andre Johnson - attacked by AIRBHG early by tearing ACL in HS

2010 - Jeff Brinson - quits team before spring ball - tears ACL at Cent Fla
2010 - Brandon Wegher - leaves team 1 practice into fall camp
2010 - Marcus Coker - breaks collarbone in fall camp
2010 - Jewel Hampton - tears ACL for 2nd time
2010 - Adam Robinson - concussion, academics, weed, kicked off team
2010 - Brad Rogers - out indefinitely after heart condition
    2010 - Paki O'Meara - injured on special teams

2011 - Rodney Coe - fails to qualify
2011 - Mikail McCall - breaks ankle, comes back, suspended, transfers
2011 - Damon Bullock - fumbles, misses meeting, enters doghouse
2011 - Jordan Canzeri - hamstring forces significant missed time
2011 - Mike Malloy - AIRBHG strikes early, arrested and tears ACL in HS
2011 - Marcus Coker - suspended, misses bowl game, eventually transfers

2012 - Jordan Canzeri - supposed torn ACL in spring ball

I guess anger isn't necessarily the best way to describe how we feel. We're very frustrated for sure about everything, but a lot of it is beyond anyone's control. Hence our irrational fear of AIRBHG (Angry Iowa Running Back Hating God).

(I'll answer the coordinators question in my next post)

The coordinators should be fine, Phil Parker (no relation to Norm Parker) played under Norm at Michigan State and followed on to coach under Norm at MSU, during Norm's brief but INCREDIBLY successful stint at Vanderbilt, and subsequently has followed Norm to Iowa and has been here since Kirk Ferentz's hiring in 1999. He's another Tampa Cover-2 guy like Norm was however he is expected to be a little more aggressive with blitzing and attacking offenses. Phil got a brief shot at being DC in 2010 while Norm was out complications from diabetes, Phil shared playcalling duties with former LB's coach and current DB's coach Darrell Wilson, however with the problems we had on defense that year both have taken a lot of BS criticism. Overall it may take Phil a few years before he really develops into a very good DC, but that's to be expected when someone has been a career position coach.

Greg Davis I really like and think will have a lot of success here. He has a much better history of coaching QB's than Ken O'Keefe, so our QB play should improve greatly. Greg also has a history of SUCCESSFULLY using different offensive playcalling styles dependent only on what players he has, Ken O'Keefe was a run-and-shoot offense guy being forced to call more conventional playcalls which he simply wasn't good at. Greg also led Texas through something like 9 out of 10 of their schools most prolific offensive seasons, which is saying something about Texas.

Not trying to flame or anything, Hawkeye, but we've seen some Greg Davis offense. The final two years, without superstars, Texas' offense wasn't exactly top of the line. Texas always had Nebraska's number, but we watched them struggle against some pretty lackluster Big 12 defenses. Any concerns with his most recent production?

  • thanks for the candid responses... I knew the RB situation was bad... did NOT know it was that bad. Sheesh... seems like there really is a deity that hates your running backs.

By the way... You guys got Drew Ott (DE out of Giltner, NE) in this year's recruiting class... do you have any feelings on him? I was hoping Nebraska would offer him but they never did.

Why did the RB's (Marcus Coker and Mika'il McCall) leave Iowa?

Marcus Coker was actually the subject of a domestic violence case that his ex-girlfriend filed against him before dropping the charges something like a week later. He was very forefront with Kirk Ferentz about it and obviously it was a ludicrous charge for him not to have been suspended initially for being involved with this. What happened with his suspension and him leaving is technically unknown, but the situation I feel is most plausible is this. The University of Iowa has had a few problems with sexual assault cases among students in the past (see Cedric Everson) and has since implemented some very strict student codes of conduct, including forcing every in-coming student to take an online class about sexual assault (took it last year when I transferred in from a community college and can honestly say it is just some of the worst crap I've ever had to sit through in my life). Because of all of these new codes of conduct, I think Coker was ordered by the SCHOOL, NOT the football program, to take one of those sexual abuse counseling sessions or whatever they're called, Coker felt that since the charges were dropped and obviously BS from the start that he shouldn't have to take the course so he appealed. His appeal was likely upheld because our school President Sally Mason has a stick up her self-righteous ass, so instead of taking a few hours out of a day or two of his life, he quit the team and transferred to some D-2 or D-3 school.

Mika'il McCall was, interesting to say the least. He was obviously one hell of a football player and showed a ton of promise, but reportedly he had some academic and/or character issues that the coaches missed in him during his recruitment. After he got back a few weeks after his broken ankle, he posted something on his Facebook page that made him look like an idiot, but I'm 99% sure that was only part of the problem. The problem for anyone who isn't familiar was that for the first 2-3 weeks after getting cleared to play, he hadn't seen any playing time yet and was justifiably a little ticked. A week or two after his Facebook comment, he was suspended indefinitely and left the team.

it began with general new rivalry discussions. we were talking about which of our old big 12 rivarlies (mizzou, CU) is most like our new rival Iowa... and thats really about it... we just made a new thread instead of getting off topic on the banderas thread

No problem and it's a justifiable question.

We actually had a Texas fan or two come to our site after Greg Davis became mentioned for the OC job and what they had to say was basically this.

The last 2 years before he was fired most, if not all of the Texas coaches had kind of given into an atmosphere of complacency. Greg Davis apparently started to take the Texas talent for granted and kind of got dumbfounded once the recruits (very few of which he was asked to recruit, unlike what his job will be like at Iowa) the rest of the staff didn't pan out how he was used to, Davis had some problems changing to deal with the problems in the middle of the season. I think in a way this explains why he didn't coach last year, I think his lack of a job wasn't from no one wanting him like a lot of people seemed to think, but instead I think it was him wanting to find himself and figure out the question of if he still wanted to coach anymore.

The answer to this question is obviously yes. Time will obviously be the only true determining factor about Davis, but if he can recapture some of his genius that led Texas to 9 out of 10 of their best offensive seasons, then I believe he'll be fine.

  • Fair enough, but I have 2 questions:

    1. The original post doesn't tell anybody about anything. I'm fine with that, but in the future at least give the rest of us a lead as to what is going on.

    2. Why are we making a new thread to hear from Iowa fans, much less a singular Iowa fan?

Carry on....and my apologies for interrupting your regular programming.

  • Its already been said but just to reiterate feel free to ask us questions about Nebraska derHawkeye, and feel free to invite Iowa fans to do the same...

I never actually saw much of him on film, however from what I've read, I'm very impressed. Ott is an outstanding student for one thing, but also he apparently showed a lot of versatility in what was it 8-man football(?) in Nebraska, and with his very good size, quickness, and closing speed I think he'll be very good for Iowa. We're looking at playing a lot of RS-FR, SO's, and maybe even a FR or two this season so when Ott gets here, he will definitely have the opportunity for playing time. I feel he will RS this season because he sounds very raw as a player, but once he puts on 20+ lbs of muscle and gets his technique down, I think he should end up getting a fair share of PT as early as a RS-FR.

If you want, I'm looking to be a coach myself someday, so I'll be more than glad to look over his tapes and give my own impressions on him. Also Thanks for not offering him! I think he'll have a good career as a Hawkeye! biggrin

That makes sense.. I would say that part of his downfall was also the complacency in QB recruiting... Davis' offense relies a lot on an athletic and prolific QB... when he had Young and McCoy it was awesome... Gilbert... not so much. They definitely got complacent in their recruiting, basically just opening their doors and taking the top Texas targets without much evaluation. the last few years it has really bit them in the butt.

For what it's worth, I think Davis will do pretty well at Iowa because they have to work HARD (much like Nebraska) to recruit the athletes the need/want there. So he will know what he has to work with before the first day of fall camp.

I've seen his tape... very raw and athletic, but most of all... kid has a motor that doesn't quit. He will bring energy to the DL even on the scout team. Even if he never becomes an All-B1G performer your team will be better with a guy like him on it.

Good points, his offenses have typically really flurished with athletic QB's, which could just make our recruitment of Trent Hosick (you guys should seriously google him, he as a 6' 2' 220ish lb QB won the Missouri Heavyweight wrestling championship this year) even more important.

I also think you're right about him NEEDING to know what he's doing each season with him not having the same talent level as previously, will really help us and him.

FWIW, the Texas fan also mentioned that he doesn't think Mack Brown wanted to get rid of Greg Davis in the first place, but he decided that the only way to bring the team back out of its complacent state was an overhaul.

Thanks for some further insight. I agree 100% that every team can use guys who never quit, that's one of the biggest reasons why we've had so much success on our defensive line in the past. Mitch King, Matt Kroul, Karl Klug, Bryan Mattison, etc. have been so successful. They were undersized and in some cases VERY undersized for DL, but they never quit and by the time they graduated, all were All B1G performers.
