UCLA, Goodman, Priest Willis

  • Well just sae that Tahaan Goodman committed to UCLA, and from that I get that we can assume that Priest Willis is going there as well, Goodman has been pretty open with the fact that he wants to go where Priest goes. And with todays commit from him we can pretty much assume that UCLA has Willis in the bag. They are killing it with DBs in this class, not sure what they are getting told, but if ya want my opinion its only a matter of time before Mora leaves for the NFL. Anyhow, I never thought we would actually land Priest, but ill admit I did have alot of wishful thinking. But it will make it even better when we beat UCLA in Lincoln this year, cant wait to go to that game, had that one circled for a while now. Anyhow, not knocking our class at all, cause I am impressed thus far, but we need to make sure that we hold onto McWilson, cause losing him to Kentucky would be a massive loss

They focused heavily on DBs and OL for their 2013 class. It is likely they put the majority of their effort and resources into those position players more so than any other group. 12 of their recruits (couting Willis as the 12th one) are either defensive backs or offensive lineman. That is 54 percent of their recruiting class. They also focused on OLB.

The focus on their recruiting class is telling me they have major talent issues for some of their units on the team.

  • I agree, just baffles me as to why so many talented kids are drawn there, other than the weather and location. I mean UCLA hasnt done anything signifigant, although I do like kids going there as opposed to the other school in town, which if they had any sort of coaching they should be in a BCS bowl year in and year out with the talent they get every year, but I like our class, it has tons of potential, we just need to hang on to the guys we have thus far, hate losing recruits

Makes me wonder, what the hell did Nebraska staff do? I like a lot of the guys in the current class, don't get it twisted. But in regards to your comment above about UCLA staff concentrating efforts and resources on their biggest needs and hit homeruns, Nebraska had big needs along both lines and have hit mostly fly balls hoping they will land fair.

Here's to Willis wanting to go make his name and mark by himself with The Big Red!!

Kinda sounds like sour apples. UCLA wasn't going to be down forever, they just needed a good coach cause you mentioned the other draws to LA. UCLA has a really good football tradition. Nebraska hasn't been significant since the turn of the century and there aint warm weather, beaches, and hot babes in bikinis crawling around year round either

  • It is hilarious looking at the LSU fans freaking out they didn't land Goodman or Willis. They have such big egos thinking they can land anyone they want.

  • 602husker, I can see where it may look like sour apples, and part of it may be. and completely agree that we ourselves have fallen into mediocrity. And am very excited about becoming relevant again. And no unfortuantely we cant sell the beaches and hot babes, lol!!! But boy oh boy I wish we could

  • Win and you become sexy. It is that simple of a concept, but much harder to pull off. Notre Dame and OSU are in cold climates and pull recruits out of warm climates.

  • Yes tOSU is in a cold climate but they also get alot of recruits from in state that are used to the weather, and from Michigan. Ohio has one of the best high school football programs in the nation, so its hard to pull kids out of Ohio that grow up Buckeyes fans. Dont get me started on the Notre Lame topic. What other school out there does ESPN and every other sports show force feed everyone on how great they are??? I cant name the number of times ive turned on the t.v. or radio and seen or heard a special on the greatness of Irish football and when your a kid growing up and you are hearing and seeing this, and then they recruit you, it sure doesnt hurt their recruiting

  • well said, Fitz. I graduated from UN-L and when walking across campus on a January day with 20 mile an hour winds in my face, often wondered why a player from a warm weather state would want to come to Nebraska. To me, the fact that Osborne and staff were able to do what they did in the 1990s is remarkable. Alabama should be able to do what they do---they have proximity to many athletes and play in warm weather. The fact that Osborne could win three titles in four years in Lincoln, Nebraska of all places, is quite a testament to Osborne and his coaching staff.

  • And what would really help is if we could devolop our own Nebraska high school and the kids that participate in it. Nebraska high school football isnt even in the same league as alot of other states. I grew up in Alaska and I can honestly name more kids that are from Alaska in the NFL than I can kids from Nebraska. In the states that produce alot of talent, High School Football is a year around program, when it is not season, they are in the weight room and have alot of off-season programs, camps and things to keep them physically and mentally focused on football. I know in Alaska, I grew up playing hockey and football, and with Hockey it was a year round program, high school football up there sadly reminds me of high school football here, people love it but its not life. And I dont know how or what could change the culture of high school football in Nebraska, but I would love it if we could recruit more in-state kids

Nonsense. We have 10 players committed from warm weather states.

  • I don't totally buy into the warm weather factor. If that makes that big of a difference then why hasn't Hawaii won the last 10 national championships. It's more about selling what your staff and school has to offer. Some coaches are just better salesmen.
