The NCAA can't stay out of its own way

  • Found a list of rules changes the NCAA is considering in an effort to streamline its rulebook. Problem is, they're considering one that I, and I'm guessing others, kind of like regarding transfers.

I don't know that there is a more backwards group than the NCAA.

Immediate eligibility for transfers under consideration by the NCAA | CollegeFootballTalk

We've often decried the fact that, while coaches can leave a football program for another with very few ($$$) repercussions in the vast majority of cases, most players who decide to transfer must sit out a season.

  • Wow.

We are basically talking about free-agency in the college ranks.

Where the heck does a 4-year scholarship fit into this kind of arrangement? More or less complete opposites of the spectrum regarding possible rules changes.

That would be like raising the Inerstate speed limit to 90 while reducing the minimum speed to 30. The guy driving 30 will get run off the road.

  • I don't get it. I can see maybe if the head coach who recruited the kid leaves, but that seems like you're just causing an enforcement nightmare. And my goodness, could you imagine the tampering that would likely occur? Would love to see what Bielema thinks of his gentleman's agreement.

May as well go full on NFL...

(Mark Emmert steps to the podium)

"...and with the 1st selection of the 2012 FBS division College Football draft; the University of Florida Atlantic selects Mario Edwards, DT from Denton, TX.

The University of New Mexico is now on the clock."

  • Another thing that was mentioned was allowing coaches to talk about recruits before they sign. This will allow coaches to use the media to recruit for them.

I applaud the NCAA for trying to trim the rules down, but don't get rid of rules that fulfill a purpose.

It seems that most every institution assigned the responsibility of oversight is suffering from the mismanagement of bad people; either morally corrupted, driven by power, driven by greed, driven by ignorance or just sheer ineptitude. The NCAA doesn't have a clue what its core principles are supposed to be and how to administer and enforce such. Really pathetic.

I really believe that with the NCAA it's pure ignorance.

Ignorant organization overseeing major college programs. What's wrong with that picture?

That ignorant organization is the 'hired' staff to oversee the major college programs.

What we have with the NCAA right now is exactly what our schools have allowed to happen.

Very similar to the Banking collapse of 2008. You let people run about without reasonable restrictions, and greed will guide their way.

Without good rules, and without good rules that can be enforced, you are sitting on a ticking time bomb that will eventually explode. The only question is how big that explosion will be?

If this goes through, do you think anyone will pay Tmart to leave us.

  • Thanks for sharing Michael. This absolutely blows me away. Seems to be totally against what college athletics is supposed to be about.

  • What fascinates me is that none of you seem to understand why the rule against transferring came to pass.

One has to go all the way back to the early days of CFB, when players used to literally sell themselves to a program for a year here and there, and then transfer to the next school that offered them more money. Oftentimes they would adopt pseudonyms to play under.

It was all hidden money, of course, but this sort of freelancing was pretty common back in the days before the NCAA and the NFL. There was a player name Johnny Blood who was notorious.

When the NCAA was formed, this was one of the first issues they addressed with legislation.

I somehow doubt that it will return to that sort of free-for-all business.
