TM's Mechanics Improving via QB coach

  • Big Red Phoenix said...

I'm saying this doesn't prove anything. Playing better football is the only thing that proves anything.

I would compare this to practicing at the driving range. There are a lot of guys that can go out to the range and work on their mechanics, and start hitting shot after shot at their target. Then they get out on the golf course, and all of a sudden those improvements disappear and they revert back to old habits.

Like I said, I am proud of him for working hard, and hope it continues. But until it translates to on the field results, it means nothing to me. I guess more than anything I don't want to see people expecting this dramatic change in Taylor this fall. I don't think it's realistic, and I don't think it's fair to him.

Using your own analogy... which golfer has a chance at change and better success? The one that does nothing and just does what he has always done or the one that goes to the driving range and actually works to improve? The reason we are excited is because the young man is actually doing something to get better and doing something proactively and noticeably.

If he wasn't doing anything people would be ragging on him, now that he's doing something it means "nothing." Which i don't buy. It means something, now whether that meaning holds up under pressure in the season is another thing but there is cause to applaud the young man and be excited to see him play to see if there is improvement.

That's probably a bad analogy klein. Golf's a different animal. Don't know if you play or not, but practice leads to reinforcing bad habits and developing 'range rats' as often as it makes great players. Even the most expert tutilage can encourage downward spirals as easily as reverse them.

I said Taylor should be applauded for putting in the effort. And you are absolutely entitled to your opinion. But I'll stick with it meaning nothing. Show me on the field and I'll get excited. I don't think Calhoun is doing him any favors telling everyone to wait til they see the difference, either. He's setting him up for failure, imo.

    fair enough.

P.S. I play NO golf at all, so yeah it was a bad analogy on my part. I can see your point too though, I applaud Taylor as well but still reserve my praise until I see it on the field. I am encouraged that he is taking action though.

I get why Sam would write this, why the OWH would print it, and why the coach would say this. What I don't get is why fans would get excited over it. It's just another example of "what the hell do you expect him to say???" It's not like he's going to come out and say yeah, we've been working on it, but his mechanics still suck.

All the credit in the world to Tay for working his butt off, and I hope he continues to do it all summer. But there's nothing to get excited about until we see it affect a football game. JMO

Actually, Calhoun could have said any number of things to convey that they are working on TM's mechanics without being too descriptive, positive, or negative. Calhoun has worked with guys like Cam Newton and Jake Locker. I doubt he has to "sell" what he is doing to the fans back home.

Add the fact that TM's presence at the Manning camp figures to be as an assistant/instructor, not a participant. The camp is for high school kids, not college players. That speaks well for Calhoun's street cred and the progress TM is making.

Excellent point, TUF...one that most all would miss. However, DUCK! J/K - Tay's doing what we all would want him to do. What more could we ask?

I must not have made my point very clearly. I wasn't commenting on Calhoun's credentials, I was saying that, by raving about Taylor's improvements and telling everyone to just wait and see how good he looks, he was putting added pressure on Taylor, pressure that could have been avoided.

Personally, I think he could have just said something along the lines of Tay is progressing well, working hard, and left it at that. If the progress is there, it will speak for itself.

Given a lot of folks think TM has a LONG way to go to improve his mechanics, any improvement he makes is likely to be fairly obvious. In addition, Calhoun probably understands that people consider TM a one trick pony, incapable of making mechanical improvements. In that vein, his comments make good sense.

BTW, I would hardly rate what Calhoun said as "raving" about TM. It's not like he was saying TM is going to be the next Andrew Luck or a first round pick in the NFL draft. He simply said that people will be quite surprised by the progress he has made. It's really a pretty benign comment when you think about it.

I guess it comes down to a persons belief as to whether TM can actually make these improvements. I've been a big critic of TM thus far, based largely on his lack of real QB tangibles. In truth, I think Beck has been more focused on making TM a field general than a technically refined QB. At the end of the practice day, there simply may not be enough time for Beck to hone TM's passing skills because the finer aspects of running the offense take up the bulk of practice time.
