"Why assume that last year's frustration will be repeated?"

The question confuses me because I didn't assume any such thing

I must have misread your post.

    Sorry about that.

  • In a nutshell, we had no long scoring ability last year. TM didn't provide it running or passing, the RB's didn't provide it, and the WR's didn't provide it. As such, we became increasingly easier to defend as the year went on.

Beck did show a bit of an epiphany the 1st half in the bowl game. It seemed like a purposeful attempt to make the defense respect the long pass and back out of the box. It seemed to loosen things up quite a bit until things went in the dumper the 2nd half.

Without the threat of the long pass, we will be easy to defend. Rex is not a deep threat from the RB position. He's a fabulous 5 yard back, but no-one is afraid of him going 70 yards. The threat of scoring from 50+ yards has to come from somewhere.

The 2011 offense was way too "nickel and dime", especially for an offense prone to fumbles and dropped passes. Grind it out offenses are for teams that are very sure handed. We aren't.

We've got to start biting off bigger chunks of yardage. If we aren't even a threat to do so,it will be along year.

Abdullah and Turner could definitely be those "homerun" threats.

So, so true. We did, in fact, nickle and dime our way to four conference wins last year (Minnesota was.... well, Minnesota). We also blundered our way, in nickle and dime fashion, to three losses. This, oddly, became de rigueur for us as the season progressed - see Penn St and Iowa. Eerily similar, but in a different fashion, to 2009 when we went to a field goal offense. Luckily, then, we had a Suh led defense.

This won't cut it and I don't believe it will cut it for Pelini, Beck & Co either. As you've pointed out in other posts, Beck's fit and start performance, last year, must resolve into consistency and our QB 'problem' must be resolved also.

Reports from spring and summer training are encouraging in this regard. Lots of talent here so, we wait - we see.

BTW, our first half performance against an exceptional South Carolina defense was eye-popping at times. Omen?

I like Bell and Turner for the deep routes.

I agree, we have personnel that can get after it, and these are two of them.

However, what's the point when we can't get them the ball in space, with any consistency, where they can utilize their skills and rip off those large chunks of yards?

Which gets back to the title of this thread...
