  • I swiped this quote from TheUknownFan's post in the Quarterbacking thread.

    Let's talk about it.
    Martinez is a tremendously gifted athlete. He has amazing speed, a tough body, a strong competitor, always trying, works hard, studies, pushes himself to improve, wants to excel.

    He's actually a good passer with a quick release. He throws a nice ball. He can't throw all the passes which the really good passers do - the soft touch pass to the flat or over the LBs to a crossing target. He's probably got three or four passes instead of the five or six passes the better ones have. But he's a pretty good passer. Did I mention he has amazing speed?

    He's in a great offense with great skill players around him. So how come this doesn't add up to 'world beater'? You would think it would. I do, but.... something is missing. That something is called Football Mentality.

    With football mentality, the player knows two things.
    1. When you've got the football, YOU DON'T GIVE IT TO THE OTHER TEAM. It's your football - they can't have it. They get the football AFTER you score!
    2. When you've got the football, you've got one job - ADVANCE THE FOOTBALL. Ten yards - first down. Another ten yards - another first down. Wash, rinse, repeat until YOU SCORE!

    That's football mentality.

    It's not even Football 101; it's Pop Warner football. Some say it can't be taught. Maybe, but it can be learned. The switch can be flipped. The light can dawn. It truly is the only next step Taylor needs to make.

    A football mentality means, "Hang on to the football". No fumbles, no interceptions. And it means, "Advance the football". Don't throw incompletions when the defenders have split and left great gobs of empty field in front of you. Did I mention amazing speed? Good grief. RUN!!!

    Football mentality, right? So back to the beginning. If your starter has all these attributes but won't flip that switch, Won't win the game for you against all odds. Does he stay the starter until he graduates?

  • honestly... I think Taylor has all those attributes at home.... on the road he tries to do TOO much. He needs to be consistent both at home and on the road.

    I don't disagree with anything you say here, but determination and physical attributes alone does not a QB make.

    He's actually a good passer with a quick release. He throws a nice ball. He's probably got three or four passes instead of the five or six passes the better ones have. But he's a pretty good passer.

    Were you referring to practice here? In real games, he sometimes demonstrates these characteristics. I guess it's fair to say we have different standards on what a "pretty good passer" is.

    Don't throw incompletions when the defenders have split and left great gobs of empty field in front of you.

    "Pretty good passers" complete these throws consistently.

    Martinez can't flip the switch because he does not have it in him and he never will. He is not a QB, he is an athlete that Nebraska is hell bent on making a QB. However, it's been established for some time now that he is in fact the QB until he graduates.

  • As I stated in that comment, the longer TM remains the starter, the less likely it is he will ever get demoted. You have to consider how rare it is for a QB with as many starts as TM losing his job. We already know that Bo is hopelessly devoted to TM, even to a fault.

    TM will have to go into a totally disastrous sequence of games for this to ever happen. He will probably have just enough good games to forestall that ever taking place.

    As Lando said, it's kind of like Bo having just enough good games to not get fired. They are kind of paddling in the same boat, so to speak.

    Spurrier/Garcia? Not saying the issues were comparable in any way. They're not. Still, Spurrier's team is third in the nation. Garcia could never have done that.

    I'm not giving up on Martinez, but if he could be made to flip that switch, we would have a glorious offense. If not....?

    Garcia was a bad apple along with being marginal on the field.

    Shaw has the perfect skill set for our offense. Not a burner but can move the sticks. Poised, throws well, good pocket presence. Would take him in a heartbeat

    That said, I don't think TM will be a bad enough citizen, nor Armstrong ready enough to over take him.

    Couldn't agree more.

    Honestly, no way in hell Bo benches TM. Just isn't going to happen. And I'll go a step further, if TM falls extremely backwards, plays horrible and costs us games, he still won't be benched. Sad really.
