Spring Sneak Peek: Quarterbacks

  • daddyact said...

No, it's not just you. Many fans tend to have that reaction, however, I think that's a left-over from the games that ended the 2010 season, and the Wisconsin game last year.

Like Mike said, 125 straight passes without an int, and nearly 3,000 yards of total offense. That ain't crap.

I know many, many fans want someone else, but that's only going to happen when one of the other guys TAKES the job away from him.

DA you sound like Lebron James no titles with all that stats! The QB position other than the coach is the most quintessential position on the field. Franchises anchor on that position. Dynasties are built around the QB position. Right now NU needs a colossal UPGRADE feel me bro? Screw the stats especially when they did not win us championships!

As my old HS coach would say... "If it hits you in the hands, it better be a catch."

These are athletes playing at the highest level in College Football, they get their tuition paid for to make catches like that. I know the quarterback gets his tuition paid for to make better throws and reads too, but to say that the fault of these drops are entirely on the QB is false. WR need to bail a QB out occasionally and a QB needs to make a perfect throw to a WR occasionally... by the way many of these drops were actually passes that hit receivers in stride. (esp. Brandon Kinnie)

I agree in part to what your saying, but I will put a dime in for the recievers. WIth the inconsistancies in Taylor motion and delivery, players don't know where the ball is going to go. It is hard to build a raport with a qb who isn't throwing a consistant ball.

Martinez is a shotgun, we need more of a sniper.

    Tell that to Nick Saban

I hear people say this... but I don't believe it's as prevalent as so many make it out to be... this is an excuse. There is blame, equally in my opinion, on both sides... Kinnie dropped more balls this year than last year but had the same quarterback... I guarantee you Rich Fisher doesn't want to hear that excuse.

I think TM's throw is pretty consistent. He may throw a bit heavy on the shorter throws because of his motion, but receivers generally do get used to how one QB throws over another. That's what practice is for.

I don't know that they don't know what the ball is going to do. It's not like he's throwing tumbling balls or horribly wobbling balls. Sometimes his throws are simply not on target, but when he puts the ball into their hands, it's on the receivers to make the catch.

It may not look pretty, but his throwing motion is actually consistent.

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

Its not an excuse its an assignment of blame. Coaches coach, fans analyze...just my thoughts. I'm not saying i didn''t get mad when i would see BK or Turner or Bell drop one last year but I can understand the frustration they probably feel not knowing what shoulder the ball is going to come over and whatnot. That uncertainty causes doubt...especially when you have grown men trying to take you out.

Anyways, BK is moving on and we have a VERY talented core of young receivers in place for the next 3 to 4 years. I am excited to see this offense in 2013. It could mature by the end of this season depending on the qb position.

I'm not sure what you're point is here. Simply don't understand the LeBron James comparison. I have never said that TM was a Championship QB.

I remain unconvinced that he will ever win a championship, but I do think he has been the best QB for this offense the last two years. I couldn't see Cody or Zac winning a championship either. Certainly not without a championship caliber defense.

I do think there needs to be an upgrade at the position, but right now, I have yet to see how Carnes, or any of the non-scholarship QBs provide that upgrade. Feel me bro?

Now, Brion has the chance to prove he's a better QB this Spring. I sincerely hope he turns out to be more than a 100% improvement. That might result in a championship.

However, with a two year starter returning, and both having another year in the system, BC will have to be a championship caliber QB in order to take the job away from Martinez.

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

  • DA, You haven't seen the wobblers that I've seen?

Hopefully another offseason will help his maturation and developement will help him next year. Spring ball should be fun for us this year. Lot of competition on the offensive side of the ball.

I'm amused. People talk about how good these receivers are while ignoring the fact that the guy throwing the ball is the one putting the ball into their hands.

How frustrated do you suppose the QB and the OC might get when the WR runs the wrong route or turn the wrong way.

Believe it or not, these kids did make incorrect cuts and ran incorrect routes last year.

Hopefully, with another year in the system, everyone will be on the same page most of the time.

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

Good points DA... also don't forget that Beck's system requires the QB and the WR to be on the same page mentally every play... most of the receivers have option routes depending on how the defense is covering them (This is what Beck calls "Going where they're not). The first year under the system you are bound to see some bad communication and when a receiver runs a bad route it sometimes looks like the QB doesn't know where he's throwing it.

Over all another year in the system and another year developing that cohesiveness which is so important in an offense like this and I think we will see the passing game start to change dramatically.

    Yes, I was so disappointed in the losses to Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State and Iowa…;

    Wait, what?

DA i once told you that in this case consistent mediocrity in QB plays calls for occasional wins catch my drift? Trying to be a SA with me DA? common man!

Yes, obviously, TM is the only QB in CFB that throws a wobbler now and then.

  • Mark this date on the calendar. I say that, without a shadow of a doubt, Brion Carnes is Nebraska's starting quarterback this fall ! No doubt in my mind. Mark it down.

Good post. There is plenty of blame to go around. The WRs need to make more catches and the QB needs to make better throws.

And we need gas @ $2.50.

how could you say that "without a shadow of a doubt" without even seeing Carnes in a real game scenario?

it seems like Pelini has firmly hitched the wagon to TM barring injury IMO
