Since you're new to the BIG, I was wondering who you consider

  • your biggest rival in the conference....if not a rival, most hated will do....

I know it takes years to develop a "Two sided" rivalry but was curious who you guys think will be "that team" for you...

I'd love for tOSU and Nebraska to play every year, but that isn't going to happen with the divisions... I thought our two schools could've developed a good rivalry...hard to do if you take a couple years off playing each other...

  • Michigan (not a rival) but the most consistent team we will have to play.

Yep, there is no rivalry there yet, but I see us having to battle it out a lot of year to go to the B1G CCG. Iowa kind of is because of location and they really hate us. MSU has some potential aswell.

  • Yeah I was kind of thinking Iowa because of proximity, but honestly my thinking is your division should come down to you and "TTUN" more years than not....makes sense....

I'll tell you this, they are very easy to hate......haha....enjoy it...

If we both do the right thing...., we will play each other every year. In Indy.

I've said it many times, Michigan stands between us and the CCG. And we stand between them and that game. There's no reason we and UM won't develop into a natural rivalry. If either they or we string together a few consecutive wins, the other will sit up and notice. And vow to do something about it.

In the Legends, only Nebraska and Michigan have the program, the history and lore to think of themselves as entitled to a spot in the CCG. We will each learn to point at the other as a 'necessary' win. A 'must' win. This is the stuff of 'natural' rivalries.

This burgeoning rivalry will not supplant the OSU/UM rivalry. Instead, it will be similar to the decades long rivalry between Nebraska and Oklahoma. A rivalry of necessity and respect. The OSU/UM death match will never end - just as the Oklahoma/Texas Red River Shootout was always primary to OU.

The B1G's wish for a blossoming border rivalry between Nebraska and Iowa is laughable. NEV - VA GONNA HAPPEN! We are 'somebody' and they are nobody. It will always be that way. Any B1G fans thinking that it will develop, well...., they just need to get a clue. I'm serious.

Our permanent cross-division game with PSU will forever be just another game with limited meaning attached to it. The road to glory goes through the CCG and that mean a Divisional Championship. And that means N vs UM. Every year.

One other thing. The "NU" logo. We know it belongs to Northwestern. We know they have squatters rights to it and that they have logic on their side. And we know that everyone in the Big Ten agrees they own that logo. So? Screw that. We want it too. It's ours. That's our opinion and we're sticking to it..

I have an idea. NW and NU play every year. I suggest a 'Trophy' game between us. Guess what the trophy should be? That's right - the "NU" logo. Who ever wins the game gets 'logo' rights for the next year. If they lose, they become 'NW' for one year. If we lose, we become "N" for the year. I like it.

Well, there's my thoughts on future rivalries. See you guys in Indy! Every year! Make damn sure you get there. Get It?

This is about as close to being reality as anyone can offer up. Although, Nebraska considers every team their "next rival" as they did in the Big 12 after the breakup of the Big 8 and the real rivalry between Oklahoma and Nebraska. Game of the 20th Century still stands as legendary ...for all time, as Yogi would say.

  • I think Northwestern is the closest right now... a both teams have beat each other at home and two games have been decided by a total of 4 points. Hard to consider a program like Northwestern our "it" rivalry seeing as they don't have the history, but right now it seems like that's been the most intrigueing game.

I think Michigan State could turn into a heck of a rivalry. I don't think Michigan will ever get there because it will always be Michigan-OSU... Michigan State would have their in-state rivalry but I think Nebraska could end up being their big (and our big) out of state rivalry game.

Nice work, K9. Well stated and I agree with all of it.

Not sure why folks here would hate Michigan. I have always appreciated the Michigan tradition, uniforms and fight song. Best in college football, imho.

Thanks, CD. Coming from you, that's high praise.

Do you have an opinion about the "NU" logo? Is it permanently lost to us? I fear that it is.

  • Easy question thats already been answered but I'll chime in anyway....

When we first joined the league/division, I thought our main rivals would be Iowa, PSU, and UM.

I still feel that way, but Iowa is toast. That rivalry reminds me a lot of the mizzou rivalry, they'll be decent for a few years every decade, and might win 2 or 3 per decade. But in the end NU is going to own them.... I think geography and timing will keep this fairly heated most years though.

I think PSU is our biggest rivalry as far as both programs go. NU v PSU will have some marque match-ups in both football and volleyball, as well as women's Bball.

UM is our biggest divisional rival. They're fans have the same mentality as NU's. We expect to be in the B10 title game every season. I think this is going to turn into a very heated rivalry from Nebraska's side, and Im curious to see how much it develops on UMs side. They already have 3 heated rivalry games, plus another trophy game with Minnesota, so who knows how long it will take for them to loath us.... My guess is that by the time Hoke is fired they'll have a passionate hate for us, but we'll see.

  • The biggest mistake I think the BIG made when splitting up the divisions is not putting tOSU and Mich in the same division....it taints our rivalry to possibly play them twice, and back to back to boot....It would have added to the rivalry if our last game was to get into the CCG...now, it could be meaningless if we have both "wrapped up" our divisions and know we'll be meeting again a week later for the CCG....I just don't like it and I think the BIG screwed the pooch on that one....JMO..

I think their thinking was that getting you two matched up for the title on a neutral field would be an even bigger draw than a game for the division.

I totally agree that you two should have been put in the same division. It badly disrespects your rivalry. To think that you could win that game then have to face a rematch one week later is unholy. I hate it.

How can you possibly celebrate a great win over a hated foe knowing that it doesn't matter at all if you have to do it all again the very next week?

I truly hate rematches in general, but that one would be the worst.

but, the flip side of that is a year like this year. Lets say we drop one of our next 3. Then the last game of the year Ohio State plays Michigan and if they beat them they keep them from winning the division and destroy any chance they have at a title. Imagine the joy that would bring Buckeye fans.

I don't think this works. I mean. I get it that it would work in your scenario, but that's a one-off deal. All it says is that we would have back-doored into the CCG. That's not particularly interesting all by itself.

Besides, any pleasure OSU would get that way would never make up for them needing to give that vanquished foe a rematch.

Even Michigan would despise doing that if they were the previous winner.

Those games are very, very tough to win and to give the loser a second chance is just unholy. It's a total diss of that traditional rivalry.

I'm saying as a Buckeye fan that would have to be great for them. They can't go and Michigan is a win away and they keep them out, and end their Rose Bowl chances.

You are also assuming that both of them are going to have things locked up when that game rolls around. There is a better chance that more often than not one of them will need a win to clinch a spot, like this year.

Michigan (not a rival) but the most consistent team we will have to play.

Agree. It will be Michigan because 20 years from now we'll look back on this annual game as easily being the most important in the Legends division. While Ohio State/Michigan is one of the greatest rivalries in college football, and the burgeoning Michigan/Nebraska rivalry will always play 2nd fiddle, it is the closest thing to see as being a 'rival' in the B1G at this time for Nebraska. We already have some history with 1997 and the 2005 Alamo. I think Nebraska/Ohio State will turn into a bit of a rivalry as well.

Even our greatest rivalry with Oklahoma was 2nd fiddle to the Red River Rivalry for Oklahoma. And as painful as that was to type, it is reality.

Like Oklahoma I think it will be a rivalry surrounded by great respect between the fan bases much like the Oklahoma/Nebraska rivalry. Proximity always fuels more hate (Michigan/Ohio State, Oklahoma/Texas, Alabama/Auburn, USC/UCLA) as the fans live amongst each other 24/7/365.

Iowa will be nothing more than what Missouri or K-State were for Nebraska in the Big 8/Big 12. Just because they hate us doesn't mean all that much.
