Sam McKewon knocks it out of the park

"But however hard Bo and Co. just worked to cobble this bunch together, they'll have to double it on the practice field. Either that, or the Huskers live for a season with the growing pains. And at grim, wary, determined Nebraska, there is rarely time for growing pains."

McKewon: For class of 2013, everything is on the (D) line - Omaha.com

For a half-hour Wednesday, Nebraska coach Bo Pelini conducted his annual signing day soiree in his usual fashion. But then, just as he was wrapping up, Pelini dropped a sound byte that will serve as the commentary of this class.

  • “We're going to fire our guns next year,” Pelini said. “I told every kid that I looked at recruiting: 'Get your butt ready to play.' Because that's going to be our mindset. We're going to try to get each one of these kids ready to play. And we're going to try to use every ounce of depth we have.”

We should have tried this last year, and maybe we would have been in the rose, instead of the cap 1.

  • So does this mean that TA will actually get a shot at the starting QB job? Not saying that he would win it but will Bo truly give TA a legit chance? I'm not trying to fan the flames but if Bo is being honest about firing all the guns then QB is where it should start.

Really?? I don't even know what to say to this! That is the very last position on the team I'm worried about!

or maybe I should be more worried about the 700 points a game our defense gave up...you can blame some points on turnovers but when there is 600+ yards given up as well...you have problems

I can't remember one single game that he alone, lost NU last year. I can remember a few that he won NU though. He is not the problem. Scored dang near 40 points in all their losses....yeah, he is the least of their worries, matter of fact, he a bright spot to next year. Especially if he is working as hard as he did last year. DL play....DL play.....DL play

Maybe I'm not explaining my point correctly, let me try again. If Bo is true to his word then all positions on the football field, even starting QBs should be held to the same word. All I'm talking about is open competion, nothing else.

In regards to TM, he's a great athletic but to me Bo has played favorites with TM since he arrived at NU. Don't think he should of been designated as our starting QB. That's just my thinking and I do support all the players and coaches on the NU football field so please be gentle when throwing insults my waybiggrin.

In closing I support the entire NU team.....

I should have been, but now i am too old to get into the profession. But the only place I would want to work in college is at NU.

Who did we have at QB? A JUCO transfer that can't make it in the UFL (was 3rd string for a UFL team this year) a 4-star recruit that transferred to Tulsa and completed a worse percentage of his pass than TM in all of Taylor's 3 seasons as starting QB. A QB out of Florida that can't grasp the play book and a True Freshman that has tons of potential but needed surgery, is still learning the offense and isn't as adept at reading defenses right now.

And now a True Freshman coming off of an ACL tear.

    Really?

Taylor has busted his butt time and again, he ticks me off with some of his decisions but still was 2nd in the B1G in passing efficienct and 3rd completion percentage. He also ran for 1000+ yards. To pretend like the coaches have some sort of agenda in letting Martinez start is laughable and an affront to both their character and the team as a whole.

I find it laughable that any fan can sit back and look at the coaches and say "they shouldn't have ever played this guy" when we are fans. Not coaches.

You're entitled to your opinion but evidence suggests otherwise. Some might think Cody Green didn't get a fair shake but his output at Tulsa shows me he would have never made it here anyway.

I am not going to fight about Tmart anymore. He has one season left, and he will leave with No championships, and No Bowl game wins.

BTW that coach who had Lee and Green above Tmart in the fall of 2010 just won a BCS bowl game.

Mr. Klein, you can throw insults my way if you want but where both entitled to our opinions. If is you want to call me a "laughable fan" that's up to you. Actually I don't really know how to respond to your comments. You don't have any idea what my football background is and the same with coaching football. Just because I believe Bo bent the rules for TM doesn't mean anything negative about the team, just Bo. You know I don't like Bo nor TM but I have put 100% support behind them.

not a laughable fan just a laughable stance IMO. Suggesting collusion over more qualified players to get your favorite on the field... i don't get it. These guys are coaching for their jobs, they're going to do what they think is best for the team. And from what I saw from all the other options we have had at QB they made the right choice.

I think the HC should always have the prerogative to pick the starting QB. While it is true that Watson scored Green higher and had selected him as the starter, Bo made the right decision and for the right reasons. It is Bo's team and its his neck.

Cody Green was not, is not and never will be a good QB. He simply doesn't have the reflexes needed to play the position. Taylor Martinez was selected all Big Ten QB by the coaches in the Big Ten. So much for the special insight you posses with your football background. He has flaws but he makes plays, sometimes great plays. If he had played behind LSU's OL last season he might have run for 1500 yards and made a lot fewer errors. He is improving in the mental game and the passing game. He will continue to improve because he is a great competitor.

that Watson had Lee AND Green above T-Mart. But i'm done arguing about it... there are no facts, just opinions veiled in he said she said connections to the program. The cold hard truth is TM will be the starter in 2013.
