Return specialist

How would you feel if Nebraska used an offer in this class for a player who was primarily a return specialist? Not saying there's anyone out there who fits the mold, but in general, waste of a spot or solid move?

My opinion on this topic is that we have a number of good, fast players in our offensive backfield, receivers and in our
defensive backfield as well that can run a 4.4 forty, athletic etc. Why can't our coaching staff find a couple of guys and develop them into this role?

There has to be a couple of guys that are fearless, fast and want to make a name for themselves to be the game
breaker guy and handle the ball on returns. Johnny the Jet won a heisman trophy returning kicks and making plays
as a receiver and get a few carries here and there.

Boggles my mind that we can't find a couple of guys to be the game breaker that the other team has to game plan for? We are deep at DB and at wideout, we need to find a guy from these groups and get em ready. Maybe it has something to do with the scheme and coaching?

We win special teams every game and get our turnover margin figured out and we are playing for the BIG Championship and a BCS bowl for sure this fall.

  • Also safe to say until our special teams units are coached better...doesn't matter what we do with our returner spots.

It hurts me to say this, but this is EXACTLY the issue, not the players. People can jump on ol' Barney all they want, but first on my list of assistants to go would be Els.

Like has been said on here before, Ross has the title of ST coordinator but it is a group effort. The whole staff works on this.

Schaefer and Burntz talked about this less than a week ago.

Ross has done a nice job. WR crew is as good as its been in years.

Recruiting the players we are is an improvement, we need to stake out claim though and learn how to close.

Ross Fischer doesn't deserve this criticism.

Why are you talking about the WR coach, when he is talking about the LB coach?

  • Whoops. I'm flying around. My apologies.

Is say Ross Els deserves a year if two to get his recruits in there. He's done well getting talent in here.

    Thanks Lando [faceplam]

Good move if it is a talented player.

Stealing someone from Abilene Christian, not so sure.

Iirc Abilene christian has a pretty return guy in the nfl

nevertheless he's right... Els isn't in charge of the return men from what I understand. So there goes that theory. And I think he's a good LB coach... guess we'll find out next year when he'll have to coach dang well.

yes, Els will be watched closely this season. time to prove his worth by coaching these young and talented backers up. His stock could go way up over the next 12 months.

  • Our special teams are atrocious. 5 fumbled punts this season and no return game outside of Idaho State. They were just as bad last year. It's not a personnel issue on special teams it's a coaching issue. A return specialist would be a wasted scholarship IMO.

Just as bad last year? Weren't people way high on Abdullah/our return game in general coming into 2012?

I agree that when three different guys are fumbling punts out there, it comes back on the coaches.

to be fair our PR game was bad this year, especially after the NW game. But the KR game was definitely hurt by the new KR rules.

Probably not as bad last year my fault, but far from good over all. Abdullah was good returning kicks in 2011, but we still had fumbling problems. Our Punt returns were bottom half of the Big 10 and our punt coverage was bad.

  • I would absolutely love having a guy who specializes as a return man - they do exist, you just don't hear about them often because pure return men are actually rarer in the NFL IMO.

BTW, I think Martinez sticks in the NFL is as a kick returner.

    This thread just got hijacked.
