Return specialist

How would you feel if Nebraska used an offer in this class for a player who was primarily a return specialist? Not saying there's anyone out there who fits the mold, but in general, waste of a spot or solid move?

I like the idea Mike.
My primary concern would be "Will this guy be able to hang onto the ball and not fumble?"

Only if he's the return man from day one... and he has lots of ability. If he's Devin Hester-esq, then take him.

I agree with klein. If you can get a guy that shifts the field to your offense's advantage consistently and can score occasionally then it's a no brainer; and most especially if your place kicker is deadly accurate with some good distance.

I would make the offer if the coaches felt confident that he would be ready from day 1 to be the returner. Saves your regular contributors from being in special teams. He has to be good though -- cannot be worse than the dropsies we had last year.

If we're going to scholarship a long snapper, why not a return man? That's how I look at it.
With that said -- It will take a lot more than just a hands man to change our special teams for the better.

It would make sense because you have the word "primarily" in there. Anyone capable of doing this is assuredly going to have enough talent to at least provide quality depth at a regular position from day one as well, and likely start by the time they are a junior or senior.

I have a hard time wrapping my mind around a stud return man who is incapable of contributing at another position at the college level, by his second or third year. Do they exist?

Didn't mean he wouldn't contribute elsewhere but wouldn't likely be a key factor.

Teddy Lampkin jumps for the track team. Five returns for TDs his senior year in 14 total attempts. Best athlete in the state two years ago. I believe he'd have three years left of football eligibility.

Why can't a guy like Jamal just practice catching punts? Can't he get better at it? We used to be great at returning kicks with guys like Niles Paul an he didn't even have great hands

If he catches the ball and does not turn it over it would be worth it at this point. We have guys running away from the punt right now. Field position can play a vital role in a game.

I actually agree with this. He hesitates way too much after the catch. Abdullah's the best returner on the team by far, but he'll be the starting RB next season. I would like to maybe see someone like Terrell Newby return kicks... if he can also get some clock in the back field it might be worth burning a redshirt.
If we recruit one, I think he needs to be a guy that can play multiple positions on the offense as well and that is a dynamic play maker that can have plays drawn up specifically for him.

I'm not saying it has to be Turner, but there has to be a back,WR, or DB that can do something to help us out here. They need to get some legitimate practice time for this.
