I think Klein was focusing on his punt returns. Running through the tackles and fielding a punt are different, and Abdullah has been pretty reliable on taking care of the returns.

    Yeah, maybe he was.

I don't think it really matters what role he is playing, he fumbles too much in general and is not held accountable.

  • Maybe there is some nerd stats guy out there who can find this answer...

When is the last time Nebraska lost the turnover battle by 3 and still won?

I will say this much. Last year we lose that game.

Yeah, your right. Bo keeps TM in the game no matter how badly he screws up so he should do the same Abdullah.

    Up vote to this

that's exactly what I was saying. Sheesh. Thanks BTBR.

For us to say he's not held accountable is ridiculous. It's so funny... people want to treat players the "same" but they constantly want certain players to get special treatment. Tyler Moore should be starting... Aaron Green should have been coddled... TM should be benched for throwing an INT or two... or three... Rex Burkhead fumbles without an opposing player even touching him... Abdullah has been reliable on Punt Returns and Kick Returns this season.

You saw for yourself what happened when he was "held accountable" and taken out.... you put a player in a bad position doing something they don't normally do and you expect them to do it better than the guy who's been getting the most reps. There's a difference between holding a player accountable and sticking with them even when they screw up. Holding a player accountable goes beyond taking him off the field for screw ups, it goes to practice... it goes to work outs... it goes to what the fans can't see.

    Abdullah - 19 Carries, 101 Yards Martinez - 18 Carries, 65 Yards Heard - 1 Carry, 18 Yards Cross - 1 Carry, 3 Yards

    Thanks BTBR!

Any word on why Heard and Cross, specifically Heard, being used so lightly?

I don't know of any reason, no. In my personal best case scenario, Burkhead will be done for a couple of weeks (at least) and we start giving Heard and Cross a few more carries. Heard's lack of touches is mind-boggling.

Was wondering the same. I trust the coaches are putting our best foot forward (bad pun intended), but B.Heard and Imani Cross excite me and I like seeing them get touches. I'm not suffering from some "the grass is always greener" kind of thinking, as a healthy Rex and Abdullah are our 1 and 2 guys no doubt.

BTW, Heard's 1 for 18 is a nice lil' single play stat pumper.

this does concern me... On short yardage situations I think Cross should be able to get about 3 yards a pop, kid just motors through tackles. Heard is a play maker but he's kind of in that flux position. I think you see Heard get more touches this week against Michigan. We need to keep the ball on the ground and have long methodical drives to beat Michigan. No fumbles, force a few turnovers (Hold on to the dang ball on those picks!). Perhaps Michigan will be flat after beating Michigan State.

This is the biggest game of the season. Lose to Michigan and the hopes of Roses goes out the window for sure... win... and the picture gets a bit more Rosie but there's still work to do.

  • We need equal time share going forward for Ameer and Braylon with cross getting the short yardage. Rex needs to be sat until December. Someone needs to tell him enough is enough. Man up and take the ball out of his hands. It's crazy. As Bo would say, "we'll be FINE!"

No worries Klein, you can get after my comments or posts, nothing is personal.

I am not sure what you mean by treating players the same, but I think players should be benched if they play horribly and/or make costly mistakes. I deplore the special treatment that some players get, notably Martinez and now Abdullah.

I get that stars are treated differently and get more leeway, but there should be a limit. I guess it's funny how stars are determined under Bo, but that is a different story. When you consistently hurt your team with costly turnovers and mistakes, you should get benched IN GAMES. Reprimanded in practice doesn't mean anything if you still get to start and play. Those types of consequences ring hollow to players. The biggest commodity is game time and that is what players respond to.

Abdullah may be approaching Martinez status, meaning it doesn't matter how bad or often you screw up you will not be taken out of the game. Why would he think any different, he plays no matter how significant his mistakes are. How many mistakes does it take before you stop sticking with a player for a quarter, half or game? Seriously.

You don't not discipline somebody because you are afraid of a negative outcome as a result of the discipline or you are scared how a person will handle consequences. Which is why discipline can be difficult to adminster and maintain, but it can payoff in dividens if applied consistently.

Believe me, I really like Abdullah and he contributes greatly, but he also hurts the team with his fumbling. I hate to think how other players would get treated should they fumble or make similar and/or consistent and costly mistakes.

  • I loved Cross's first down run where he went through about 3 wildcats and carried em across the first down line. We've been missing that

We need back up players to get real game touches so it bothers me that Heard and Cross only got one touch each. What's up with that. I'm not saying that we play these guys the whole game but they need real game experience, what would happen if Abdullah goes down with an injury?

Yeah your right that was a great run. He showed power and explosiveness and I love this guy. He kind of reminds of me another former husker RB named Tony Davis who played back in the 70's, he had the same kind of demeanor when running. I see good things coming from this player in years to come.
