Question for the board

  • daddyact said...

He was when we still had Roy in the backfield, and the reason for that was because when the defense keyed on TM it opened things up for Roy. The Missouri game is the perfect example. They had one guy shadowing Taylor and suddenly no one who could stop Roy

You have to have that game-breaking RB to loosen the defense. I love Rex, but that is not his role, or shouldn't be.

Taylor also can't be the guy they expect to make those big runs either. Last year, they keyed on him rather than the back he was optioning with on the Read-Option. They knew TM was the threat.

It's no mistake that both Rex's and Taylor's ypc dropped and the number of big runs from each also dropped last year. If either Ameer or Heard step it up a notch this season we could see a repeat of the 2010 offense before TM was injured.

I agree competely with this. Rex does fine in the these situations, but it not taylormade for them like Ameer and heard could be. I think getting those guys involved more this year helps get a couple more explosive plays a game.

How often did we get the ball to our back on the outside on a speed option play

How often might we have done that with Roy on the outside?

How many big runs did Roy break on the outside in 2010. Not many, most were inside.

He broke plenty "off tackle" plays, both counter and otherwise on the outside in 2010. Watch KSU, Missouri and others. Helu could run inside and out.

We are talking about outside the tackles.

  • You could also bring in the passing game both Helu and Rex had sure hands however I would take Helu in space. Although Rex can do some things in space (see Ohio State last year). Also The O-line does have quite an impact on big gainers giving guys holes and better ability to time their moves.

I think Helu would have been a huge addition to the offense giving Rex time to rest. Also, he would be one more guy to scheme against.

OT - I feel if our O-Line improves much at all this year Rex will be very scary as a Senior.

He broke a few. Not everything went inside.

I'm curious. How much did the loss of Roy Helu affect the offense last year?

Or should it have made no difference?

ZERO; ZELCH!! DA you and i know that one "monkey" doesn't stop the show! We all can give all the excuses we want to if his absence made Nebraska play poorly last year then we are NOT a good football team!

Just curious last did the team have LESS funbles or not!?,,,just another question. Thank you very much!!

You're full of beans. You don't replace an NFL-caliber player with a freshman and not expect there to be some consequences to the offense.

Nobody said that his loss made them a bad team, but his loss made the offense less effective than it was in 2010.

Hell, I have no idea whether they had fewer fumbles or not, and I'm not going to waste my time looking it up. I'm not sure what the hell that has to do with the issue anyway.

  • Just to stir

With Taylor and Rex gaining another year in the system/program, the better WR group and Oline group the we had this past season wouldn't you expect that to offset losing a player like Roy?

Well, the WR group could have, but we really didn't throw the ball much more than we did in 2010, and I would argue that our OL was not that much better than in 2010 either.

I do think it will be much improved this year, and hopefully either Heard or Abdullah will make the sort of progress Roy made from his freshman year.

We could argue that TM was not that much better than in 2010 either. Or, some may even argue TM was less effective than in 2010. stir and [glue]

That's kind of my point, Dean. TM wa les effective, and guess what, so was Rex. Both saw their ypc drop off in 2011. Rex's total yrads went up, but considering the loss of Helu and his 1200 yards, the running game was not as effective. I believe that the loss of Helu was the reason for that drop-off.

Losing Helu was one of many variables that setup for some frustrating losses and play on offense. Some of the big ones include Helu being replaced by a three freshman, a new offense, OL play that wasn't consistent, average QB play (ALL QBs), and playing an "independent" schedule. The last one, joining the B1G, had the biggest impact, IMO. I don't think Helu was the biggest loss, but a big loss.
