Perlman talks Eichorst, decision

University of Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced Thursday that former University of Miami athletic director Shawn Eichorst would be Nebraska's next AD.

  • Very interesting comments about the experience and ability regarding the current athletic department.

No internal candidates were interviewed. Perlman said he felt Nebraska needed to go outside the program for the best candidate. He also said the program needs to do a better job of making sure associate athletic directors get the necessary experience to allow them to move up some day.

"We just haven't done it, we just haven't moved people around and given people other responsibilities," Perlman said. "They've been in their positions for a long period of time.

"It's not a criticism of Tom, and maybe it wasn't possible. There are just some people there who I think have good potential to be athletic directors, but need a broader range of experience within the athletic department to market themselves to schools that are this stature."

Seems like a criticism of TO and his school's AD to me. Interesting.

  • I don't see it so much as a knock on TO, but more of a recognized deficiency in our program. We need to expand this and start throwing out Ad's that carry the Nebraska name I.e. Wisconsin in this hire. How great would it be to have that out there t/o the country. "Former assistant Nebraska AD, hired by........ "

Tom was asked to carry a huge load, turn around the culture, hire coaches, get new facilities built and move to the B1G. There was no time to be nurturing or grooming people...it was all a constant series of actions that needed to be taken, which left no time for career building of others. Fact.

With all the talk on this board and in the media about the preparedness of a Meyers, Williams, and maybe even Trev Alberts, it just seems interesting that everyone was so off base according to Perlman.

I understand he indicated there might be potential there, but no one was ready?

Again, I am not upset with the hire, but I just think Perlman's comments about his Athletic Department's and Nebraska people's resumes and preparedness was/is interesting.

Dr. Tom had a say in this, maybe not from the beginning but in the end. I don't know why Trev's name even got brought up earlier, but he had no shot. Yes maybe Meyers should have been given other duties to prepare him, Williams hasn't been around long enough to prepare him. I think Harvey might have decided he needed to do this without much assistance from TO, but again he had a say.

Apparently he did not have a say. IF this is true, this is a disgrace. TO has worked hard for 5 years to undo what Pederson, Callahan and Co. had ran into the ground. He should have been consulted from the very beginning. Harvey whiffed on Steve Pederson, I hope this hire turns out to be better. How is this guy sooo impressive? I think he is a fine canadate, but putting up this kind of money when he has little to no track record is foolish. This may work out just fine, It may not. Like I have said before, our programs are stable. And as for his "behind the scenes" style of leadership. Thats not how successful atheletic programs are run these days. An AD needs to be very involved and a visible figure to the community. People are going to want to know the guy we are paying a million a year. In the end, this may be a solid hire, but there is sure a heck of a lot of speculation in this decision. I dont think this is how T.O. envisioned himself going out.

Gather yourself and stop the bitch fest, please. I'll say this again. Anyone that doesn't believe that Tom and Barry didn't agree on this hire they are living in a fantasy world.

Ray Tanner figures Nebraska scored big with its hiring of Shawn Eichorst as its next athletic director.

“If you're looking for a hire that's a touchdown, a slam dunk and a home run all in one,” Tanner said, “Shawn Eichorst is it.”

Tanner, the former South Carolina baseball coach who now is the Gamecocks' athletic director, worked with Eichorst when he was at the Columbia, S.C., school from 2004 to '06. Among Eichorst's duties as South Carolina's senior associate athletic director was overseeing the Gamecocks' baseball program.

“I was so impressed with Shawn,” Tanner said. “I learned a lot from him.”

Tanner's glowing praise of Eichorst is roundly seconded by others who have worked with the Lone Rock, Wis., native.

Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez said Eichorst will be a good fit in Lincoln.

“He's a Nebraska-type person,” Alvarez said. “Very down-to-earth, hard worker, good family ... I think he'll identify with the people of Nebraska.”

Mike McGee, who as South Carolina's athletic director hired Eichorst, was delighted when told by a reporter that Nebraska had hired Eichorst, who had been at Miami since 2011. Now retired and living in western Colorado, McGee repeatedly touched on one thought during a phone interview.

“This will prove to be a wise decision for Nebraska,” McGee said.

There is no need to freak out that Tom wasn't involved.... Read all the posts above and the picture should become clearer. There is no way that Eichorst got hired without Tom's approval and what I believe was a strong recommendation from Alvarez and many others. Eichorst may look like a young green guy, but he had extensive responsibilities at Wisconsin for many years as well as South Carolina. Both universities with strong and substantial athletic programs. This mans resume is outstanding. Saying this isn't how Tom would "want to go out"... Bit dramatic and there is absolutely no way Tom would stand by quietly if he wasn't in agreement with the hire. Tom is still and always will be the most powerful man on that campus down there when it comes to anything with athletics... don't be fooled by the hype.

Ha. Nice. This is in no way a bitch-fest or absent minded rant. I am simply saying that there is a lot of speculation in this hire and that maybe we should have involved our current athletic department a little more in this decision. I am simply stating facts and I am not sure he has the crudentials to justify putting him all the way up to the 6th highest paid AD in the nation....Yet. I also stated that this may be a good hire but it is maybe a little speculative for the kind of $$ we are paying him. Read my post the way I wrote it....not the way you wanted to read it.

I read you post as it actually reads, and to the degree that your innuendo portrayed that T.O. is being disrespected. You questioned the decision and don't apparently believe that Shawn is qualified. You did not state facts, you stated an opinion.

So now we're going to attack people because they have a different opinion on the hire and how it came to be? Truth is NOONE but Perlman and TO know exactly how much input TO had in selecting the new AD. I don't see a reason to discredit people and talk about bitchfests when a lot of what I am reading clearly states TO didn't have much input at all and may feel slighted. Again this could be complete garbage like most rumors but since there are a good number of people feeling this way I don't believe there's a logical reason to dismiss it just because you don't believe Perlman would hire someone without the advice of Tom. Usually am right there in your mindset Zonie but damn loosen up a bit.

  • Read Sipples column from this morning. He has been close to this program for a long time. If TO has resounding confidence in this hire, WHY was he not even in attendence for the announcement?? No congratulations speech. No statement saying that this man will do whatever it takes to lead this great university in the future. After all the money we wasted in that whole Callahan and Pedersen debacle we need to be a little careful with throwing money around. Like I said, this may be a solid hire in the future, but the way it came about was a little scary to some.
