Pelini in no hurry to hire new DB coach

  • I think this is a good sign that he plans on looking outside for a new hire instead of inside right away... he's got a list and will narrow it down. We need someone with recruiting clout... Els is now the best recruiter on staff as a position coach (Kaz, Fisher and Garrison are still fairly new to the game).

    Any guesses on an outside hire? i've heard Mike Minter and Ron Zook being thrown out there.

  • Ron Zook isn't even remotely possible in my mind, but WOW I would love that hire.

    Agreed. Zook can coach a secondary not to mention he is a heck of a recruiter.

  • It doesn't sound like there's going to be a rush to fill the position. For my part, I'd love to see Mike Minter get the job, but that's obviously one old fan's opinion who like everyone else thinks he along with Mike Brown defined the best of the best when it came to knowing the defensive backfield.

  • I get the feeling that taking the situation slow means hiring within, and Bo has an idea who he wants there already. Hopefully I'm wrong, would really like to see us go outside.

    Why wouldn't he just promote now (especially for recruiting) if it was going to be a "hiring from within" decision? This is completely different than filling the DC position before Capitol One Bowl... there were reasons for taking their time then... If he is going to hire from within he would do it before Spring Ball IMO... I think this means he looks outside to hire.

    Remember when Sanders left he hired from outside... I think he does it again. Zook and Minter seem to be on people's short list but I think both are stretches... Zook is a DC for many schools it would be hard to see him go all the way back to position coaching this late in his career. Mike Minter makes more since but he has never coached at the college level (this high) before... not that that has stopped Bo in the past... and there is the issue with not offering his son yet.

    I'm thinking he tries to poach a coach from another B1G school to help with recruiting just as he did with Kaz. Possibly a former PSU or OSU coach.

    He might promote Hollowell, but if you can grab Minter wouldn't that be a better hire?

    I would be shocked if Bo touches any of the PSU coaches with a ten-foot pole.

  • We might have DB coach announced by noon today (it is 10:28 am right now), Bo is just saying so the reporters will leave him alone (lol) and/or in case his first offers get turned down.

    I would not be surprised if it is Warfield and he is the DB coach in all but name for the spring. He can't be officially named until he graduates in may as I think that is a requirement.

    I think that would be OK but would prefer an experienced position coach, like Kaz.
