OT-Royals and Rays Trade

  • I have been a diehard royals fan since I can remember. I love that they have someone in the front office willing to make deals that are intended to help them instead of just dumping good players for prospects. Having said that I am so angry at this trade. They gave up 2 studs that were going to make a huge impact in the upcoming years. Shields preforms well in big games, but if they can’t get to a big game what will it matter? Davis is an average player at best. To give up Will Meyer is a joke. He was minor league player of the year. He was a guy who could be the face of your team. They need a young guy with talent and who is a leader. That was Meyer. I am so disappointed in Dayton Moore!

    The only bright side of this trade is that it will get DM fired.

    Of course, he sent the Royals' future away first, so that isn't much of a consolation prize.

    This trade says one thing and it's what we haven't been able to say in my lifetime as a Royals fan (or damn close), they want to win and wan to win NOW. You can actually look forward to a season next year where they will run out REAL LIFE major league pitching every night of the week out at The K!

    If you REALLY want to see the Royals win, this is what you do! This is what REAL MLB teams do, you trade guys to get guys! I think Meyers is going to be a great player, I'm sure he will. The rest are huge maybes, nothing more, in fact outside of Odorizzi, they are nothing. Montgomery is flat out trash at this point and if the 4th guy could have easily been the "player to be named later".

    This makes the Royals immediately better, something Meyers, Odorizzi, Montgomery and whoever the 4th guy was did. Would Meyers be better than French? Probably. To the point where it changes the W/L record next year? No.

    Royals fans who are against this trade need to do some research first. Look into Shields' stats the last 4 years, see where he ranks in CG Shutouts, CGs, etc. Do that, THEN come back and say this is a failure of a trade, you won't be able to.

    All I've heard from Royals fans is "we'll never win without pitching" and that is 100% true. This team is built to win now, their lineup is solid from top to bottom (excluding Getz), but without pitching, it's a total waste. They now have a front line starter and 3-4 others that are big time starters as well. They have an actual MLB team pitching staff! Something we haven't had in years!!

    If it makes you feel better, go get the pulse from the Rays fans, they are PISSED at this deal and think they got totally ripped. Shields is a guy that not only can win you games, he'll go 8+ night in and night out and save your bullpen and also give you an opportunity to use the bullpen the day before as well.

    Good God people. frustrated

    Hell, most other REAL baseball teams couldn't give 2 sh*ts about who the prospects are that are being traded to get a #1 starter, that's the life of a Royals fan man, we know more about our prospects and get tied up in them than we do our MLB team.

    PLEASE look into this trade a bit more before bagging on it.

    1) I reject the premise that James Shields is a number one starter. He isn't.
    2) Wade Davis is due for regression, especially if we start him. Which we will.
    3) The prospects GMDM gave up are worth a lot more than the potential to be a mediocre team in 2013. The rotation is still weak, the team is still poorly managed, and there's a lot of gambling in the hope that the bullpen will have a repeat performance and the young guys on offense will either replicate or improve upon their 2013 numbers.

    I just don't see this as anything other than a huge win for the Rays. Sorry. I really want to be optimistic, but the constant failures in trades and signings this organization has made over my lifetime and especially under GMDM makes it really hard to see this working out.

    Bottom line: Giving up the future to be "in it" around September isn't worth it in major league baseball.

    Shields is not a number 1 by any fashion. If they would have gotten David Price then your points are valid. They got a Number 2 that has regressed over the last 2 years and a bullpen guy. In order to get that they gave up their 2 best prospects. 1 of which experts say is a can't miss 5 tool player. All that for 2 ERA's near 4.

    Ugh, no kidding. I wish we could put the myth that he plays good defense to rest. Add a replacement level (at best) bat and you have an overvalued, overpaid player that DM should've dealt a couple of seasons ago when he had a hot start.

    Gordon in Left, Cain in center, and Dyson in right.

    I think Francoeur will be a solid fill in guy all around the outfield

    Don't be surprised to see Falu at 2nd over Getz soon too.

    The lineup is going to be the best its been in a long while.

    The staff is worlds ahead of last year. Last year's "ace" is going to be fighting for the 5th spot.
