OT: Obama would mull barring son from playing football

I think this whole thing has been nationally blown out of proportion. It is a violent game where the participants know the risks before getting into the sport. All they can do is continue to look for ways to improve safety.

Number of deaths for leading causes of death in 2011 per CDC: Heart disease: 597,689 Cancer: 574,743 Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 138,080 Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 129,476

nowhere on there do I see football injuries. People knowingly and willingly smoke and eat like crap, which causes a large percentage of these deaths...yet our president wants to put a focus on football...weird.

yeah... he also fills out his bracket every year... sometimes I wonder with all his fingers in the NCAA if he actually does anything to run the country? But I'm getting too political. Suffice it to say that I'm not a fan of seeing my president weigh in on issues in sports when our country is in a crap hole.

yeah...don't forget about the MLB steroid witch hunt...does our federal government really need to spend time, money, resourses on finding out who's been sticking needles in their arses? Maybe he gets kickbacks from ESPN for creating BS stories for them.

  • So much for keeping this apolitical, eh?

A friend's son -- high school defensive end -- suffered a serious brain injury from a seemingly harmless tackle in practice last fall. He had dreams of playing in college. Now, he suffers from constant migraines, has gone from straight A's to D's, and has had to undergo extensive recovery. Thankfully, he is doing well and starting to pick up the pieces, but he will never be able to play football, or any contact sport, ever again.

I think whether or not your kids play football is a personal decision, and both sides are valid. While I love the sport and would probably let my son play if he wanted to, I would never, ever fault parents for erring on the side of caution. Traumatic brain injuries are a very real risk.

I agree... just know the dangers and don't blame the sport or make the sport worse. It's a physical and barbaric sport, it's supposed to be. Sucks that injuries like that happen, but I refuse to live in fear. I'll let my son play and enjoy life, if something like that happens, it will be a tragedy and I will feel awful, but I do not want to make him miss out on things solely because of fear.
