Nebraska/Iowa approved for Friday game

  • The Big Ten Conference Administrators Council has approved the request from Nebraska and Iowa to move the 2013 football game between the schools to Friday, Nov. 29 at Memorial Stadium.

“The Big Ten Conference Administrators Council approved the request for the Nebraska-Iowa Heroes Game to remain on the Friday after Thanksgiving in 2013 and 2014,” Nebraska Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst said. “Playing on the day after Thanksgiving is a great Nebraska football tradition that we look forward to continuing.”

Nebraska and Iowa have met on the Friday after Thanksgiving in both 2011 and 2012, Nebraska’s first two years in the Big Ten Conference. The 2013 game in Lincoln will mark the 24th straight season Nebraska has played on the day after Thanksgiving.

Time and television information for the game will be announced at a later date.

  • Good. I know a lot of you guys would rather have Wisconsin in that game, but this could turn into a great and natural rivalry if Iowa can compete within the next year or 2.

I've said before that I think it would be ridiculous to move the game to Saturday and the majority of Iowa fans I've talked to agree.

  • Good. Couldn't believe Iowa considered changing this.

Yeah, makes perfect sense to play that game on Friday if it's available.

  • Oh, and will you guys make an effort to keep from posting VIP in this thread? I'm genuinely curious about your opinions about it.

Bash the Hawks all you want, I'm not sensitive or a trash talker, just want to know what everyone thinks and I can't read VIP here.

I personally love the Black Fri game and would love Neb and Iowa to be a big rivalry but i just have a gut feeling it'll end up being us and Wisconsin and if Neb and the Badgers end up in the same division i would rather have that game as the premier game for the BIG on Black Fri

  • I've never met a Husker fan who didn't love the Black Friday game. It's an excellent showcase opportunity for the program.

I can see that. Is it because of the recent success of Wisconsin and not from Iowa? The Alvarez connection?

Definitely. The exposure is a good payoff for a shorter week to prepare.

See, this is what I absolutely don't understand about Iowa fans that wouldn't want to have it on Friday. It's such great exposure for both programs and could potentially bring so many eyes to TV.

It seems insane to even consider moving it when we've only played it twice.

I think its a combination of those at least for me and i know some other posters have said that as well

Believe Kirk Ferentz also said he was initially interested in moving it to Saturday because he didn't want a shortened week.

It just seems so premature to even talk about moving it. It's a tradition for you guys, and like I said before, could turn into a great rivalry. Maybe it won't, if the Hawks keeps going down, but it needs to be given at least 5 years on Friday before any decision is made.

He has and I think that's where it's all coming from. Ferentz is huge on routine and doesn't like change.

It has nothing to do with TV money or exposure for him, it's all about the same practice/film routine.

I agree its premature for Gary Barta and co not wanting to keep it and i have no problem with keeping it Neb and Iowa i just think the Nebraska fan base as a whole would like the Wisconsin and Nebraska match up over a Iowa if it ever becomes a annual series (which i would rather play them then Penn St)

Thing is Nebraska has been playing that game for a long, long time, so if it's not Iowa, it's going to be somebody else.

And that's why it would be absurd to move playing a program with your history on that day.
