Nebraska Chancellor Perlman Against a Playoff

  • Right now might be a good time to crank up your e-mail messages and letters to our own Chancellor about why you want a college football playoff.

I've attached an article from B1G ESPN blogger Adam Rittenberg after a recent interview with our own Chancellor.

Here is an excerpt form the attached article:

"It is clear the presidents will still make the final decision," Perlman told ESPN.com "We've had some informal meetings, the Big Ten presidents and the Pac-12 presidents, and I think we're largely aligned in thinking a plus-one with a different ranking after the bowl games to select No. 1 and 2 would be acceptable. Our second choice would probably be a four-team playoff inside the bowls. Our highest priority is to preserve the status of the Rose Bowl and our connection to it."

He later added: "I don't think we would be very enthusiastic about any of the other options."

If you want progress, it starts right within our own borders.

The sense coming out of last week's BCS meetings is that college football soon will adopt a four-team playoff model with two designated semifinals and

Why is our Chancellor speaking out for the B1G when we have only been a member of the conference for a single year?

What tradition could we possibly be wanting to honor? We've never been a part of that tradition in the past.

As a member of the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee and former Chairman, it very much looks like Perlman is grasping at straws right now as the rest of the college football world is trying to move forward.

How about the Big 10, and now Nebraska, fight for something we truly need. Truly need as in our share of the pie in the post-season moving forward?

Only thing I can even think they are trying to do is make our relevance bigger than what it really is, and to force the rest to include us in the 'pie' moving forward. Because if I was everybody else, I'd be laughing right now.

Is this the groundwork that the Big 10 and Nebraska are laying to make sure they get that piece of the pie? Because all it looks like to me is an entitled petulant child stomping his feet and demanding to be recognized while he hasn't offered all that much as of late.

I have absolutely no problem with Pearlmean's point of view.

A Plus One after the bowls would be a step forward.

A four team play-off within the bowls would also be such a step. Basically the same as a Plus One.

Those of you advocating an immediate eight or sixteen team play-off outside the bowl system are whistling in the dark. whistling

Completely against an 8 or 16 team playoff.

Have always been behind a 4 team playoff. Why make a 4 team playoff so complicated?

  • Perlman surely isn't afraid to have a different view than Husker fans. Remember he publicly called out Pelini.

There's nothing complicated about what they're doing.

Using the bowls to determine the two best teams, and then letting them play in the NC game.

    How is that complicated?

  • I've always been a supporter of the plus one game... If it ever goes beyond that then players need to be compensated for a 13 game season turning to possibly 15... That's a pro season

    How is that complicated?

It becomes complicated because our own Chancellor wants some kind of semi-final which involves the Rose Bowl having the B1G and Pac 12 Champs .Our own Commish wanted the same.

If both of the B1G and Pac 12 Champs are Top 4 teams, then it will work. If 1 of the B1G/Pac 12 Champs is in the Top 4, then it gets complicated.

Then we have 3 'Semi-Final' games.

And that is exactly what our Chancellor and our Commish are wanting to have happen.
