NCAA Looking at using Private Investigators

  • With all the turmoil surrounding collegiate sports and the NCAA's inability to keep up with the Joneses', they are possibly looking at hiring Private Investigators to assist their woefully small enforcement division.

In the attached article, the following comment:

"With only 55 persons in enforcement – 30-something on the street – enforcement can never catch all the outlaws. But told her department needed more vigilance in football, the NCAA hired former homicide detective Bill Benjamin to head a new football enforcement division."

The NCAA definitely needs help in trying to enforce the rules it has on its ledger.

Is this the right way to go about it? Interesting to say the least.

"Even my supervisor told me this week," Bill Benjamin said, "that I intimidate my staff."

The Indianapolis' former deputy police chief was a legitimate hire, says the NCAA.

But on NCAA investigations, Benjamin will be without the basic tools of his former trade -- due process, search warrants, etc. What he, and NCAA criminals, are left with is a stripped down version of street justice.

"When I worked homicide, I wanted people to know it's me. This is what I look like and I'm coming," Benjamin said. "I think I said the same thing in the NCAA interview: 'It's us, this is what we look like and we're coming. And you need to lock things down and do things right.'"

So, this means Mr. Benjamin will be personally visiting every SEC coach and Urban Meyer?

Even if he does, what power does he have?

As stated in the response, the NCAA cannot force due process, search warrants, or put people under oath.

What do you want the NCAA to do? Break laws to enforce guidelines that are not enforceable by any U.S. or state law?

Complain about the NCAA all you want, but their hands are literally tied behind their back.

How do you suggest they go about enforcing the rules they are supposed to enforce when they have zero backing by any national or state laws to perform their duties?

The current situation with the NCAA is exactly what Nebraska and every other Division I program has allowed to happen. The NCAA is merely their police force. If they want it to be better and to actually penalize teams/Universities, then give them the tools to make that happen.

  • I think it's a great idea. How effective can 55 people be at monitoring and investigating hundreds of schools in every state? It's no wonder investigations take as long as they do. In addition, is every violation afforded the approppriate man power and time?

I have always thought there should be an NCAA representative at each school or a certain number per state, depending on the number of schools in each state. If the NCAA really wants to change things they need to have a presence.

  • 30 investigators on the street? Definitely not enough.

  • The problem with PI's is that they are easily "bought" and it would be hard to get an impartial set of investigators. Not sure you could ever really clean up NCAA athletics it has gotten so big now... too much $$ invloved from so many different angles.
