  • proof it's more difficult to coach college defense than NFL. He wants to get out of his son's hair... defense was awful this year and Lane being his son would never fire his dad. Good move by Monte. This won't make USC any better, Lane is still their head coach.

  • Smart move on Monte's part.

  • Monte can't coach a college defense? I must be missing something. My guess is that he is trying to save his sons career. I lol when I read the knee jerk reactions to one of the greatest defensive coaches in history. Fire away.

  • Seen it coming. Somebody had to go and I knew it would be Monte.

  • NFL opportunities? Kiffin is 72 years old. Maybe he retired because he's old. I know I did.

I agree - Monte took the fall. Either that, or he just can't stand the kid...

Well, yes, Monte was a great college coach back in the 70s... and then did great in the NFL where Pro-Style attacks were the norm.

However, his last two stops have shown his lack of ability to coach in the modern college game. His defense at Tennessee was nominal at best and USC has not been good on defense (talent is not an issue!) the two years he's been there. Just because he's one the greatest defensive coaches in history doesn't mean he STILL IS a great college coordinator.

Monte's a great coach, he just can't hack it in the college game anymore, I think that's evident. And this isn't a knee jerk reaction, this is analyzing the evidence.

  • Monte is one of the greatest d-coordinators of all-time. I'm not going to speculate on why he was so ineffective on the college ranks, but I will assume he had to step down in order to help Lane out.

With that said, as much as I would like to praise M. Kiffin because of his accomplishments and Nebraska roots, I have reason to believe that family is full of a bunch of d-bags and I'm also butt hurt he never expressed interest in returning to Nebraska later in his career.

I have family that personally knows the Kiffin family... i'm not going to say whether you're right or wrong... if you catch my drift.

Nepotism man. Not sure if I hate the family more or the people who praise them for their surname.

Monte didn't get dumb. It's not his system, it's his inability to relate to college kids. If you watched USC this season, it was pretty evident he had lost them.

If he still wants to coach and really is going back to the NFL, he'll do well. I do agree with those saying he's doing this mostly for Lane, though. Lane needs to get someone younger in there to coach that D. Takes a special personality to coach all those egos, one Monte doesn't have.

Hence why I said he wasn't a great college coach anymore.

Sorry, just thought your post was a little more insulting of Monte than is deserved. He is STILL a great defensive mind. Not being able to deal with the modern age of entitlement doesn't change that.

Sorry, my knowledge of the family personally may have slanted the way I said a few things. My point was just that Monte is out of his element in this day and age. I still think he could do some things in the NFL but college football is an entirely different animal.

Out of his element. I think you hit it perfect that time. And I was probably overly sensitive, Monte will just always be a Husker to me.

Don't get us wrong, he's a Husker legend and a brilliant coach. HOF material if you ask me.

I think we just both know about some of the liberties the Kiffin family get to take because of their last name.
