McKewon on the Marrow Departure

  • Zonie87 said...

Brett Bielema lost five Asst. Coaches in one year, hired five new, fired the new O.C. after a few weeks into the season, struggled mid-year and crushed us in the CCG. The world of big boy college football is very fluid.

If a GA with a solid background and better than average or good skills for a GA is supposed to be the be all and end all for the state of Ohio recruiting, and the end of road for Nebraska it would probably be the first time in history for that to happen to any D1 college program.

I am sick to death of this walk on water horse hockey. Coaching changes happen, the world is still going to spin on its axis and Nebraska football is not going devolve because Vinny leaving.

Bo Pelini and Tim Beck both have better resumes and respect than Vinny and Mark Stoops by a wide margin in the state of Ohio. But, it sounds like they should just fold up their tent there and move on, I mean how are you going to beat the messiah from Kentucky?

Edit: cleaned up a little language.

    Love the "horse hockey" comment.

The biggest issue for me is we dont have great recruiting at all positions and Marrow was proven to be very successful. Its just making it worse is the decommits.

We dont have another GA on staff that can match what Marrow was doing and proved he could do.

  • Totally with you on this josh.
Vince was out recruiting in Barney's place. That should tell us something.
Marrow was our big connections to Ohio.
Yes Bo is from there but Bo went to the same high school as Marcus.
Marrow is a loss. Don't get why Bo didnt keep him and he could've made a spot for him. But Bo continues to keep other coaches who don't really recruit at all.

Would t surprise me in the least if love asked for a release.

    Zonie good thoughts.
My only thought is that Brett actually fired an underperforming coach.
    We do not do that.
I would not think marrow would be a big o a loss if we hired proven recruiters.

So yes life goes on etc but if we want to play big boy football then we need big boy recruiters, big boy coaches.
But we have a lot of coaches that would get very little looks from other bcs programs when we could get better more proven ones.

It is up to Bo to upgrade his staff as the situation calls for it. He did do upgrades with Garrison, Beck and Fisher for sure. It seems that Bo has been on a learning curve in recruiting and has made some good progress. I think we all want to see that continue. We'll just have to see after Feb. 6th and the annual Coaches meeting what he and his staff do to assess where they are and what they need to improve and to get better in all areas, not just recruiting ...that seems to be something he does hold himself responsible to do.

Don't read into that particular statement anything other than addressing all of the plethora of comments and all of the idolizing of Vinny and how we're just crap out of luck now.

Marrow was a devestating loss... don't know how you can down play it.

I agreed with Panda...and gave him an uv. Maybe you just dont understand my sense of humor. The finger to the head was actually meaning...damn we shot ourselves in the damn foot by not keeping him. And it all turned out worse than just losing Sandland

I am not saying that love is or will want to get out of here. Also I was not implying this would happen before signing day.
However i wouldnt just laugh at that notion and consider it ridiculous.
I wouldn't think a kid who started games as a true freshmen and had a dad that played at nebraska would leave either. But Moore is gone.
Marrow was a huge connection point we had to Ohio.

Josh, would like to hear what you and Panda feel Bo should have done re: Vince. How could we have kept him? Not questioning his recruiting skills, but I've been given the impression Bo wasn't that impressed with his actual coaching skills.

  • I have a question too if people wouldn't mind answering it.
What are Ina nutshell the new recruiting rules?
Also can't you now hire a guy to do just recruiting or something like that?
I ask this cuz it could tie to marrow. Thanks.

Time for a serious retraction ?

"I expect all other Ohio commits to stick with NU."

This is what I wrote that could turn out to be wrong, and it's an expectation, not a guarantee, anyway. I guess we'll see what McWilson does.

Here's some other things I wrote:

"Marrow was a helpful — not crucial — addition to Nebraska’s recruiting efforts."

***I think this is accurate and remains so***

"Where Marrow’s departure could sting is in the recruitment of junior college tight end Beau Sandland, who’d developed a strong relationship with Marrow."

    ***True***

"Even though he told (Antoine) Miles he might be leaving for Kentucky, Marrow frankly may have jumped the gun on accepting Miles’ commitment."

***This would be accurate. Nebraska coaches didn't even know who Miles was. Miles committed to Purdue in the end, but one wonders what Marrow was doing, exactly, in offering the kid.***

There was more uproar over Vince Marrow leaving a GA spot for an assistant job -- and, remember, there were no open jobs for him at Nebraska to take -- then there was over Carl Pelini leaving for FAU, and Pelini had terrific connections in JUCOs that may have cost Nebraska this year in JUCO DT recruiting -- which was far more important than a fourth receiving option (which is what Sandland would have been - at best) on an already-loaded offense.

And I think some of uproar has to do with Marrow being good at promoting Marrow -- which is fine, he's entitled to do as pleases -- but, at worst, Nebraska lost one recruit to the school where Marrow's currently at -- Kentucky -- and one kid didn't choose Marrow because he left NU. That's two recruits - at most - out of what could be a 26/27-person class.

Will it "sink" Nebraska's ship? Absolutely not. But I seriously disagree with the notion that Marrow was merely "helpful."

Beyond that, I still don't know why the lack of an open position is continuously used as a reasoning. If Bo wanted to make room, it could have easily come after the bowl game. Bo made a conscious decision to let Marrow go. I wish Marrow the absolute best of luck, but I still don't like this move.

HW -- Retract because you think it has 'sunk' our ship?

This is kind of the "end all" question in this matter.

I'm guessing most who think VM was a major loss also think that a certain coach (or more) should have been booted to make room for him on the staff. Get rid of the non-performers, bring in someone that can get the job done. From that point of view, it makes some sense, provided that would actually be the case.

What they aren't considering is that assistants getting booted to make room for a GA is practically unheard of, and as you stated, basically nothing has been mentioned about VM's coaching ability. For all we know, VM was destined to be John Blake II, a guy who could recruit his butt off, but couldn't coach to save his life. Those kind of coaches end up being a plus/minus, not a plus in the long run.

Thank you, Sam. Even though you present the facts as they exist it will not appease those who have anointed Vinny as the be all and end all for Nebraska's ability to have any further success in recruiting kids from Ohio.

In all of my years observing the crazy world of recruiting 17 and 18 year old kids, I cannot remember how a coach leaving, e.g., your reference to Carl Pelini or someone as stellar as Kevin Steele, who was hired by Nick Saban as his DC in 2007, has caused anywhere near the uproar of our friend Vinny.

Thanks for injecting some sanity into the brouhaha surrounding this controversy.

It has hurt us. A lot more than I initially thought it would. And the more I think of wasting a valuable coaching slot for a dead weight coach (cotton), really doesn't make any sense. It's a effing joke actually. Bo needs his head examined.

Cotton should have been fired not to make room for Marrow, but because he is a horrible coach and doesn't even recruit. He's worthless!!!

Now filling that spot with Marrow would have been good. But, Marrow or anyone, should have had a chance to get a spot on this staff because there should have been an opening. Not to find a spot for Marrow, but for Marrow to fill a spot vacated by a fired coach.

I guess that is kind of where i was heading with my question. I agree Barn should be gone, and that we should replace him with someone who can recruit, but is/was Marrow the best we could get? I have a hard time believing he is.
