The typical GA lasts 2 years at an institution. Marrow was here 2 years.
They typically leave for another school, unless there happens to be an opening where they are before their 3 year tenure is up.
If you think Marrow was destined to be a salaried assistant at Nebraska, I guess you can call him leaving a loss. Otherwise, he's just another GA that went elsewhere along the way like nearly all of them do.
The fact that he had ties and was a good recruiter has people putting him in the same category as a salaried assistant, but he was not. Maybe he should have never been put on the recruiting trail, but the argument that he was a devastating loss is subjective, because he was never a lock to be a regular assistant here to begin with.
It was a weird deal getting the waiver for VM to be a recruiter as a GA, and then having it backfire, more or less. Unusual scenario. But we didn't so much lose Marrow as he just moved on like nearly all GA's do.

GA's are now allowed to stay for 4 years I thought.
Also he was the TE coach, and was out recruiting when Barney wasn't.
Now if we are talking about a standard GA, I agree, be in this case we were not.

Not aware that there were different classifications of GA's. You sure about that? By what I read a short while ago it's 3 years. The NCAA reports that most leave after 2 years, which coincides with many graduate school class loads. Done with school, move on, either to coaching or your grad specialty.
Yes, he was out recruiting this year by special waiver with the NCAA, otherwise, it wouldn't have been allowed.
He did have a specific function with the TE's, but I don't think that put him in any special category of GA. That was just Bo's choice.
In summary, I've never viewed GA's as guys you end up keeping around. Can you think of another Husker GA that went straight to the assistant staff after serving as a GA? I can't.
Unfortunately, putting Marrow on the recruiting trail turned out to be a Pandora's Box. In the end, however, he was still a GA and most those guys go elsewhere when it comes time to get a salaried position.

Well, for starters, he's about 20 years older than most GA's. He showed up with a lot more background than your typical 24 year old GA.
Placing Marrow in some type of special GA category creates a contradiction. If he was that special to Bo and the program, I seriously doubt Bo lets him walk. If you have the guy pegged to be on your staff long term, you make it happen.
It didn't.

Not that easy anymore to just insert a coach that is a GA currently.
Funny though, with new recruiting rule we could have gave him the RC job and just added him to the payroll.
There are certain guidelines from what I understand of how this AD is going to move forward on hiring new coaches, a big one being experience. TIFWIW.

Zonie, buddy you missing the boat.
I am not saying this whole thing is going to crumble into the ground... but the inroads to hot beds we were having success in were due to Marrow.
Will we survive ofcourse, will the sun rise tomorrow, more than likely... will the kids that Marrow recruited choose not to attend Nebraska.... likely.

I agree most go elsewhere after GA is completed and most often times its encouraged.
But if you got back and read quotes from recruits ie Sandland... he was the TE's coach, not a GA in their minds.
Marrow if I remember correctly has been out recruiting more than just this year, yes he had a special waiver to do so, but the fact that Bo pulled Barney off the trail, and inserted Marrow... thats saying something.
Marrow was one of our top recruiters... between he JP and TJ.
Now watching the after math of the kids he was recuiting and secured commitments from who are arguably some of our best gets leaving. He must have meant more to them than just being a GA.

Depends on how the relationship transfer went from Marrow the recruiter to position coach and coordinator.
I think they are solid, but when 2 kids from the same school/area one decommits, the other is bound to have wandering eyes as well. Hoping that doesn't happen for goodness sakes, but it is probable.

Now you are raising a really valid point about the whole Vince Marrow saga.
What was VM actually telling these kids his role was when he was out on the trail?
If he was telling these kids "I coach the tight ends" and conveniently leaving out the fact that he was a GA, then I find that hugely problematic. Granted, GA's aren't supposed to be recruiting anyway, so maybe how VM was going to handle this was never a consideration.
I agree that Marrow had value. That's not being debated. I would contend that we have never hired GA's before with the expressed intent of making them regular assistants, which seems to be what some are thinking.

So you telling us you are hearing we are in for more bad news with the rest of these ohio boys. If we lose love after he is on campus all ready that is really bad and can't imagine how that goes down with him starting winter conditioning i presume.
