  • LINCOLN — Nebraska struck out on its first-tier quarterback targets for the 2013 recruiting class. Three of the four top recruits committed to Ohio State, Illinois and Northwestern, respectively. Big Ten — ouch.

Funny, but I like the second-tier guys NU has just offered more. Especially Atlanta-area quarterback Anthony Jennings, who won MVP of Atlanta's Elite 11 QB camp, picking up attention from NU and Alabama, among others.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Jennings moves the pocket, buys time, puts smoke on short crossing routes vs. man-to-man coverage and finds open receivers vs. a zone. And the three-star prospect who threw for 2,187 yards and 19 touchdowns for Marietta (Ga.) has warmed to coordinator Tim Beck's offense.

I think part of the reason we're striking out on getting a quarterback to commit is because of our depth chart. High school quarterbacks see that Martinez has two years left as our starter and that Carnes has three years left and that Armstrong hasn't even got on campus and they shy away from committing to Nebraska because they don't want to sit and watch. It's a lot easier to get a qb commit when the starter is going to be a senior and the backup is unproven, leaving the starting job wide open in a year.

I agree, or at the least is a concern. Bailey, was apparently converted to IL because of this pitch by Tim Beckman, the H.C.

    Not sure I buy that.

Ohio State has a Sophomore returning starter that has 3 years of eligibility left compared to TMart. They also just picked up a HS kid on scholly coming in this year. At best, a HS kid coming in for tOSU would be looking at 2015 as his 1st year to start.

Kain Colter will also be a Sophomore for Northwestern this year and looks to be the starter for the next 3 years. They also have a RS freshman and true frosh on scholly this year.

Illnois has Scheelhaase with the same eligibility as Tmart remaining. Not only that, they are going through a coaching change.

I disagree. Any good prospect at QB would see there is a serious lack of depth & if they are a true dual threat they could beat out Taylor if there is a true open competition before he leaves.

The big boy schools get it done with significantly more depth & talent than NU year after year. They also have tenured coordinators & a track record of developing QBs while this staff can show their development of Taylor.

Do you have any idea how difficult it would be for an incoming freshman to beat out a three year veteran at the position in an open competition? Apparently not.

But that really does not matter, because no freshman is going to take the starting job with three players ahead of him, no matter how good he is. However, after redshirting a year, he would have a shot at taking down the job if he is better than the two guys still on the roster.

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

Oh of course not. Thanks for straightening me out...lol.

I like the "apparently not" comment. That was precious...and childish. You on summer break now? Do you work in the summer?

If you think a freshman QB is going to step in and take the QB job you aren't playing with a full deck.

I'm not on summer break until the end of June. Why do you want to know?

  • I'm late with this, but Angel and DaddyAct -- let's stay with the topic of the article. If you would like to discuss summer plans, you're more than welcome to do so elsewhere. biggrin
