Is Nebraska being overlooked?

  • From a Michigan State fan...

I'm hearing a lot of hype surrounding Michigan in the Legends division, with others are giving MSU a good chance at repeating as division champs.

I will admit that I know close to nothing about Nebraska's 2012 team right now. I do know that Burkhead is a very solid RB and Bell could emerge as a top WR in the league. Other than that, I know that Dennard and David are gone. I'm not too high on Martinez as a passer. A good option QB.

Overall, what are your thoughts/predictions for this year? Would you call yourselves the best team in the Legends? What is the prediction for the game in East Lansing?

BTW, I'm not too sure how Michigan beat you so badly last year while you completely frustrated MSU. MSU >> Michigan last year. Anyways, I'll hang up and listen.

Because our defense, good or average, is very dominant against pocket passing type QBs... Out defense can never seem to play well vs dual threat-type QBs...

It depends on what our defense will be like. Which one is going to step out. If like last year, probably 9-4 again, if like 2 years ago, the sky is the limit.

HI Welcome to the Husker BYC. A lot has to do with our D, we've lost a few really good players from last year but feel that we'll be ready for the B1G schedule. Michigan is loaded and should do well but we'll be doing well ourselves, MSU included.

I personally think that NU was out coached last year vs Michigan and for some reason our coaches were not able to find a solutation to the changes Michigan made at half time. It also felt like our players lacked focus and we had a very hard time containing their QB. I see a much closer game this year and Michigan plays us at home.

Are we the best team in the league? NO. But we are on our way back and believe that within a year or two NU will be among the best teams in the B1G and the nation.

In general I feel like we're being over looked. A lot of well deserved hype surrounding the state of Michigan this year, but I don't think there is a clear cut leader for the division crown yet. MSU, UM, and NU are all pretty even right now in my book. Whoever wins the tough road games is who will be in Indy this year imo.

We lost to UM for several reasons. We were having an off day overall; it was a tough environment, bad punts, fumbled punt-return, UM faked a FG early in the 3rd which killed any momentum of ours. It just snowballed out of control. Not to mention dual-threat QB's are like kryptonite to our defensive system(see Wisconsin and NW games as well, and tOSU before Miller was injured).... We handled MSU(and Iowa) so well because of the offense they run, and the game was in Lincoln.

I'm more scared of MSU on the road than I am of UM at home. And that might be the difference in the division-champ this year.

  • I think Nebraska as we stand right now is an 8-4 type squad. There is enough talent on the roster to just as easily be a 10-2 team also. I don't think anyone in the country would be able to completely shut down the Husker offense if all the main parts as we know them now are healthy. I think Nebraska will be able to score enough points to win games, but the defense could really be anywhere from not good at all... to well above average. I feel good about it only because Pelini is a defensive guru and he has a proven track record of finding success on D.

So... I tend to drink plenty of red koolaid and believe this years Nebraska squad will surpass almost everyones expectations as they stand today.

I believe that NU finds a way to win 9 or 10 games this fall, mostly due to what I project to be a top 10 scoring offense(nationally and YES I am serious) and a slightly above average defense that will take some chances and end up causing quite a few turnovers when opponents are forced into a scoring race with the Husker offense.

  • I think until we go out and prove ourselves, we should be overlooked. We haven't accomplished anything of substance in a very long time. So why should we receive the benefit of the doubt from anyone? They can call Meechicken the preseason champs all they want. If we wanna be the champs at the end of the season, we'll have to prove it on the field.
And as another poster already stated, dual-threat QBs are Bo's Achilles heel. But he's always had great success against pocket passers.

  • In a word, yes! BTN pundits have ceded the Legends to Michigan, and the Leaders to Wisconsin.

Michigan based on what's returning this season. Wisconsin apparently based on what's not returning.

They've even ceded that MSU will be Michigan's main opposition.

    Nebraska is an afterthought.

  • No.

Nebraska could win it and will compete for the division championship. But both Michigan and Michigan State finished ahead of Nebraska last year and both have as much or more returning this year. Outside of being a Nebraska fan, there's not much reason to have Nebraska in front of them.

Actually, MSU does not have as much returning as they had last year, unless the Freshman QB and three career back-up receivers can easily replace a graduated three-year starter and their three best receivers, all of whom were Seniors, not to mention both of their TEs.

Oh, and Gholston won't have Jerel Worthy next to him either.

Huskers will beat MSU about as badly as they did last year.

For what it's worth -- Andrew Maxwell is a junior. Starting full time will be different though, no doubt.

As for your prediction -- Absolutely 100% agree. We caught them at a great time last year, after they'd been beaten down. This year? It's even worse for them, as they don't get their Bye until after us. Beyond that, their offense just plays into what we do well. No DT QB? Beautiful. Maxwell, per the MSU posters, is much more mobile than KC was -- But still not a DT kind of guy.

  • You're darn right we are, but I don't mind it because being picked in the preseason doesn't win games. It's merely for pub and ego boosting.

MSU will be good defensively but the just lose a lot offensively. Cousins, Cunningham, Martin, Nichol, Linthicum are lost. They do return a Bell and a SR laden O-line though.

It was mentioned before, but Maxwell is actually in his 4th year with the program and is a solid player. He's no Kirk Cousins, but it's not like Cousins did anything against Nebraska anyway.

On the topic of receivers, you have a point but there's more to it than that. Keith Nichol was not a great option at WR. He was serviceable, but no more. I see an upgrade at that position. Keshawn Martin, purely from a WR standpoint, was decent. We have guys that can replace him, albeit it will be a slight downgrade. Cunningham will be a significant downgrade. You mentioned that we lose 2 TEs. Garrett Celek was the other senior alongside Linthicum. He was not a huge threat, but losing Linthicum hurts. Replacing him is Dion Sims, who has shown flashes of being dominant. I see this position as neither upgrading nor downgrading. It really all comes down to Maxwell. If he plays OK, the offense won't drop off too much. Le'Veon Bell is just too good. I'm not sure why we didn't use him more against you last year.

Losing Worthy will hurt, but MSU still returns 9 starters to a top 5 defense. I expect a decent game in East Lansing, but considering NU's results against mutual opponents, I predict an MSU fan. I'm not biased though! biggrin

  • NU finished last season with a thud, got blown out in conference play a couple if times, lost to Northwestern at home & will likely not be ranked in the top 15 preseason. What is there to hype up with a similar team coming back this year? Yeah they should be better but not dominant week in & week out.

We are a dangerous team that will contend for the division however not close to an elite team I am afraid. Hopefully Bo has recruited/developed the Dline & LBers who are athletic enough to contain a dual threat this year.
