Instant analysis: NU falls 30-13

In a season that has seen many of Nebraska’s wounds be of the self-inflicted variety, Nebraska’s performance in the Capital One Bowl seemed an appropriate end to the season.

  • Good, quick take.

  • One observation. It seemed to me that the real turning point in this game came when Yoshi Hardrick went out with injury.

It's not surprising that the very next series was the one when everything went kablooey.

Up to that point we had been moving the football, and would have led but for the untimely turnovers in the first half.

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

  • Thanks for the fast turn around on this one. I am impressed by your ability to stay so positive after yet another implosion. I will try to draw some optimism from you here. I don't even really have any words to describe my level of disappointment following that game.... I am not sure that anything really needs to be said, though, that Husker Nation doesn't already know.

  • I agree...plenty to correct, but Nebraska isn't that far off from an SEC team like So Carolina. The passing game HAS to become a greater part of the O. That would really open up things for the run game.

The D played well at times. I didn't agree with an all out blitz on 3rd & 18 when the D had been doing a decent job in pass coverage.

    I'll have more thoughts later.

Disappointing season, but I'm still a proud Husker fan.

    Go Big Red!

Dude , you were shut down for 3 qtrs and held to 64 yards in the second half, last time I Checked the score is still 30 to 13. You guys would not win 7 in the sec

    Oh, give it a rest.

Carolina was damned fortunate on the Hail Mary.

  • agreed, nebraska should be a place where coaches aspire to go to, not where coaches should look to get their name built. i guess we'll look forward to next season...again

  • Good takes Michael. I was surprised at how many mistakes were made by both teams in this game. I thought South Carolina's special teams were awful and Maher was less than his stellar self.

Bottom line, two turnovers in the redzone and the hail mary changed the outcome of this game.

Thank you so much for proving how truly classless you and the SEC staple are...You won a game because your opponent unravelled before your eyes, and instead of feeling grateful, you instantly search the opponent's fan site so you can gloat? Pathetic...BTW, if SouthCarolina can win 7 in the SEC, we certainly could as well. Maybe some day you will learn sportsmanship and graciousness, but I doubt it. That makes me feel sorry for you...

  • Probably the most disappointing game of the season for me (the Michigan self-destruction and defensive ineptitude leading to a blowout loss is close). We should have won this game comfortably. I don't understand how we can have so many pre-snap offensive penalties. They are drive killers. With the game still in contention, allowing our QB to get brutalized by sacks on our final two drives is inexcusable. False starts and sacks killed us today. I thought we had created some depth on the O-line this year that would have allowed us to sub for a senior that (maybe because of injury trying to get an edge) cannot seem to coordinate his motions with the snap count. We moved backwards for two consecutive drives. I wonder why no adjustment in offensive scheme or personnel was made to counter this momentum destroying change in the game. I also wonder why on the sidelines midway through the 4th our team seemed dejected as if anticipating (or conceding) defeat. Who on the team or staff is in charge of getting these tired kids out of their own heads and back into the football game? I know Mike Ekeler was responsible for a lot of motivation of our players simply with his extraordinary enthusiasm. I think we miss him more than we realize. I know we have team captains, a unity counsel, but I didn't see any body language that indicated a belief that we would win this game. Do we have a team psychologist? Who is supposed to fire up this team when they are down? Who reminds these kids that they can and should win this game? I also believe that Beck called an unimaginative game (specifically in the 2nd half). We have perhaps the fastest tight end in the country, a mismatch nightmare for opposing teams. No linebacker in the country (not even the great Lavonte David) can keep up with Reed, yet he is not used for these purposes at all. I just don't understand. T. Martinez's pass package appears to be about 4 plays deep - why is that? Speaking of which, I know we spent a lot of time training Martinez to go down on contact, but did we instruct him to collapse when a finger brushes his jersey, the game is on the line, and it's the last game of the season? I know our Oline was chumping up pretty significantly, but make a play brother, please. I don't get it...so bummed...
