I agree they Hoke and his staff don't like the current system, but Gardner is a much better passer and more patient in the passing game than Dennard is. I think Gardner could be a good QB with good coaching. Is he going to be a world beater and star on Sundays... no. But to say the program will go backwards is not fair at this point. If anything it will stay where it is, and could even possibly move forward. Adding in a actual passing attack vs. a throw and pray is really going to help Michigan not all that much differently than it has helped Nebraska this year.

I just look at their weapons at WR and get very underwhelmed. It takes two to tango. I don't think Gardner would be a bad QB, but I also think whoever their QB is going to be next year doesn't have much to work with. Their leading WRs are Gardner (who could be QB), Gallon (a 5'9" slot guy) and Dileo (a 5'10" guy). Perhaps their TE Funchess gets some looks, but he's not going to be a primary read in much of Borges' offense anyway. They need a big bodied, fast receiver on the outside and my point is that Gardner will be that guy.

Their defense will be stout but I see them losing at least 3 or 4 games next season even though their schedule sets up better than this year's schedule. Their first seven games are (home in bold): Central Michigan, Notre Dame, Akron, UConn, Minnesota, PSU, and Indiana

They could easily be between 7-0 and 5-2 after that schedule. It sets up well to get a new QB in but talent wise they will be taking a step back and not just at the QB position. They need someone like Gardner out on the edges, a go to guy to settle down a new QB. If they leave Gardner at QB (where he's played all of 5 total games MAYBE) they lose that dynamic.

  • I know from talking with several Michigan fans over the last year that they felt this was their year to boom before they truly start the process of building what Hoke was brought there to build. I think next season is a period of transition. If you accept that its a period of transition, why not play the guy who will be there when the transition is complete? To me, Gardner should be put back a WR to allow for the pro style QB to get settled in and learn. They love Morris, i'm not as impressed as the rest of the nation, but we'll see what happens.

  • By the way, I think Michigan takes another step back next year. They will have a new QB with few proven playmakers and a very young but talented offensive line. I think they will be picked to finish 3rd in the Legends next season behind us and Northwestern. Venric Mark and Kain Colter are only juniors, Northwestern will only be better next season.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Michigan State return 19 starters next year? I believe the only senior starters they have are at RG, CB and RE.

Now, Gholston, Bell, and/or Sims may decide to enter the NFL draft, but that's not a given.

People say that we have an easier schedule next year, and we do. But look at Michigan State's schedule next year. It's not exactly very hard...

    08/31/13 vs. Western Michigan
    09/07/13 vs. South Florida
    09/14/13 vs. Youngstown State
    09/21/13 at Notre Dame
    09/28/13 Bye
    10/05/13 at Iowa
    10/12/13 vs. Indiana
    10/19/13 vs. Purdue
    10/26/13 at Illinois
    11/02/13 vs. Michigan
11/09/13 Bye (before they play us!)
    11/16/13 at Nebraska
    11/23/13 at Northwestern
    11/30/13 vs. Minnesota

And you think they will finish 4th in the Division behind Us, Michigan, and Northwestern? Ok, then...

Originally I had Northwestern in 2nd place, and still believe that may be the case. If that's the way it turns out then I see a toss up between Michigan and MSU for 3rd place.

FWIW, I don't see a let down by the Huskers against Iowa, and Iowa doesn't have talent, depth or the desire to beat Nebraska.

  • Next year Northwestern plays Ohio State, at Wisconsin, at Nebraska, Michigan, and Michigan State.

They aren't going to finish 2nd in the division next year. Chalk it.

Well if they just pass interfere Roundtree they would have beat Michigan this year, and they should be better next year with Michigan in transition. If thet beat MSU at home, which is highly likely then they'll have a chance, but I did put them 3rd and I think that's very likely.

  • Highly likely they beat Michigan State next year? Highly likely?

We'll see what happens this weekend. Despite all of their injuries, I still think Michigan State stomps all over Northwestern.

It is called an opinion, just like the rest of the great posts in this thread. I could be wrong once next year. biggrin

  • It's all good. If I'm wrong, I'll be the first to say so.

  • Tuna.... Michigan State loses most of an offensive line that was mediocre at best this season and they lose Johnny Adams. They have a few decent receivers and Dion Sims will be back. If I were Le'Veon Bell I would go to the NFL this year because his draft stock will only get lower next season as teams realize how slow he is. They'll be good, and I see them battling Michigan for that third spot but Northwestern has a decent shot at beating both. They will be playing both Michigan and Michigan State at home.
