  • I am a huge Bo supporter, but I will say this.....

In recent college football history (dating back to 2000), only one coach was with their team for longer than five years before winning the National Title. Mack Brown won it in his 8th year at Texas.

If you take away Saban winning his second NC in his 5th year at Bama last year, Brown is the only coach who needed more than 4 years to win a national title at his school since 2000.

Bo is in his 5th year and while I do believe he has done an admirable job in resurrecting this program, I don't feel like we're a national title contender, nor will we be any time soon.

But I think your stat line is an outlier. An oddity. Why should we take away Saban's record? And more importantly, why just consider their time at the school where their championship was won? That doesn't work, for me.

There are four coaches, on your list, that merit praise for their early success but the other five had many years behind them as head coaches. Those years are relevant.

    Let's look at the four....
    1. Larry Coker, 1st year HC. Was handed an absolute gift when he was promoted off the staff at Miami after their coach left to take a HC job in the pros. He went on to failure at Miami and can now be found coaching at UT San Antonio. A school that wasn't even playing football a few years ago.

    2. Gene Chizic, 1st year head coach. Congratulations to him. But there's something about his championship (cough) that I can't quite put my finger on (cough - Cam Newton?).

    3. Pete Carroll, 3rd year HC. Good coach at a good program. Got to climb in his car and drive around town talking to 5 star recruits. Easy-peasy.

    4. Bob Stoops, 2nd year HC. Ding, Ding, Ding, we have a winner. Love Bob Stoops. I might add - in my support for Bo Pelini, I am buoyed by the fact that Stoops is a friend and supporter of Pelini both as a person and as a coach. We're known by the friends we keep? I think so.

  • I don't think even saying the words "Nebraska" and "national championship" in the same sentence makes any sense right now. Bo will probably never win a conference championship here, much less a national one. I think he'll be lucky to break .500 this year, in which case he should be gone.

I bought the preseason bull about his players, his coaches, maturity, etc., but all I see is a lower-rung team destined for mediocrity. Pelini should go back to being a position coach in the SEC where their athletes can make him look smart again, because he looks like a fool right now.

This year's senior class may indeed leave behind a lasting legacy for me: the year I stopped being able to stomach Pelini and his brand of "Husker" football.

Please don't scoff at Minnesota or Penn State. There is no reason they should win in Lincoln, I'll give you that. But as we've shown over the last few years, we've let teams beat us in Lincoln that have no business doing so.

Iowa and Wisconsin are struggling, no doubt. But so are we....we aren't good enough to just show up. Those are games we should win as we are the more talented team, but once again, we've lost plenty of games when that has been the case.

All that being said....I don't think we go 3-5 or even 4-4. I thought we'd go 6-2 before the season. I think we'll go 5-3 now.

As far as the revenues go....isn't a big chunk of the revenue stemming from ticket and memorabilia revenue which is obviously funded by the fanbase.

We "struggled" against a potentially good team and lost by a single score on their field. Let's not forget that UCLA was 6-6 on their regular season last year, under a very bad coach, even with the #8 and #14 recruiting classes in 2010 and 2009.

Iowa lost to Iowa State (also 6-6), at home, with no running game at all. Vandenberg is not going to beat Nebraska throwing the ball. They also managed to beat Northern Illinois by one point. They are in real trouble right now.

Wisconsin lost to Oregon State with only 35 yards rushing. I realize that OSU has probably improved from last year, but a 38 point switch from the season before? That's a sign that UW has problems. If defenses can key on Montee Ball, their passing game had better pick up the slack.

Nobody said we could win by just showing up. Hell, no team is good enough to do that, not even Alabama, but this team is certainly good enough to beat both Iowa and Wisconsin, presently.

i assume you think we'll lose to MSU, OSU and either Michigan or NW. MSU and OSU maybe, but I'm willing to wait and see what changes are made by the staff before I'll write this season off at 8-4.

Wow. Please, give up on the team now, so you can begin the incessant downbeat of negativity and disaster.

Really, why not go find another team to cheer for so you won't be so miserable?

Hey I grew up in a mobile home. Also have been to LA. Maybe I saw you out there. Oh wait. I wasn't in the fashionable part though. Nevermind. I guess I didn't see you then.

    No, I guess you didn't.

"I have to live in a fashionable part of Los Angeles and pay far more for the privilege than you probably make in a month".

    Luke Perry is that you?

Generally people who find it necessary to boast about privilege and success don't have either or it was handed to them.

    Yes, like you would know.

Oh, and I never said one word about privilege or success, only that I happened to live in a fashionable part of the city, and paid plenty to do that.

but go ahead and make assumptions.

What I am saying is that great coaches don't need extensive time to get their team to the promise land anymore.

I take away Saban's 2nd national championship in his 5th year because he had already won prior to that.

I'll give you Coker to an extent, but not the rest.

Chizic, Caroll, and Stoops all came to their schools when the team had failed to win more than a handful of games the season prior.

Ultimately, you're as good as your record says you are. Only one coach in the last dozen years has needed more than one full (freshman to senior) recruiting class.

  • There's a good conversation going about the head coaches, but let's end the personal bits. Thanks, everyone.

Just a question. How many National Championships has Stoops won since 2000??????

Auburn was 8-5 in Chizik's first year. They were 9-4 on 2007 and 5-7 in 2008.

Chizik was the recipient of the best player in CFB in 2010, and followed that up with five losses in 2011. He'll never win another NC unless he gets another Cam Newton.

First of all, I HAVE given up on this coach (and the team that is bleeding transfers like crazy might tell you they have too) for reasons I described. So, check.

I am confused by your argument, though:

I say, "this head coach is falling, he needs to go."

And your response is, "stand by your man."

Sorry, but Bo is not Nebraska.

  • If he isn't in the B1G championship game in the next two years, then TO had better seriously have his Rolodex up to date with replacements!

I'll just let the facts stand for themselves.

Only ONE coach in the last dozen years has needed more than a full recruiting class to win the big game.

If it does not speak to you about the process of building a championship program, it at least points out the impatience most programs have.
