  • I understand going with rex in crunch time but the four non conference games alone would have done wonders for rex longevity as well as the young guys confidence. Not to mention games like Michigan where every play after the rout was on we were risking our season leaving Taylor and Rex in

  • I like Aaron Green. Like his confidence. Like his big-play ability.

But, in Rex Burkhead and Ameer Abdullah, Green had two guys he was going to have fight tooth and nail to take carries/reps from. Green was a hard worker, of course. But you're not going to outwork Burkhead and Abdullah, who are cut from the same kind of cloth when it comes to work ethic.

He wasn't going to be "the guy" at Nebraska. Roy Helu -- who is more talented than any of them, and I'll take that to the bank -- wasn't "the guy," either. Was Helu happy after his first year? Oh, goodness no. There isn't any way Aaron Green was unhappier after year one than Helu was. And Helu played more in 2007 than Green did last year.

But for players who have been the guy for years, it can be a tough transition. Remember how hard it was for Marlon Lucky? He rolled into town and found himself up against some guy named Brandon Jackson.

And add in that from what I can gather Marrow is cut from the same cloth as Rex and Ameer when it come to work ethic and might get some carries this year even if just as a big back. I thought Aaron had great potential but even though I think Beck would have gotten him in space more to be an everydown back in the Big Ten you will have to get some tough yards between the tackles and I always was curious how Aaron would have developed from this perspective but we will never get to find out.

it certainly sounds like he was not ahead of Abdullah coming out of spring, doesn't it?

Well, we could sure use a juco RB now.

Nonesense! aaahhh that opinion is irrelevant right now. Stay with the thread AG is gone; Nebraska moves on! Good luck AG wherever he goes.

  • I guess I'm not surprised by Aaron's decision. It was obvious he wasn't happy. Even though we needed to keep Rex in games that were close last season I remember plenty of times in which we could have put Aaron and Ameer in and rested Rex but that didn't happen. I guess I find the timing of Aaron's decision a bit odd. I would have thought that he'd make this decision back in January, after the bowl game. But to make this decision right after spring practices, knowing he's going to get more carries this fall, just makes me scratch my head and wonder.

  • At least we know who the #2 back is now. Heard moving to DB makes it look even worse

  • @ Lithia Husker!,,,,,i remember very well last year on a thread you did called "TRANSFERS" and everyone nearly took your head off. In that thread you challenged everyone to predict who would transfer this year.

Aaron Greene was the common denominator of most of the feedback,,,,,just FYI! Its unfortunate that AG decided to transfer he was one of most Husker fans' favourite! He sure was mine. IMO, regardless of his reasons, so be it i wish him well and am sure he would succeed where ever he goes next,,,,,,Husker nation needs to move on and its counter productive to point fingers,,,that's football.'am sure the coaches would adjust fire, learn from the experience and drive on,,,,,go Huskers!!

  • Disappointing but not surprising. It would have been exciting to see how Aaron G grew as a college running back, but it sure seemed like his heart was not in it for quite awhile.

  • Not happy about AG's departure, but I think you can break this down pretty easily if you try.

*As a co #2 or #3 running back in 2012, he was looking at maybe 3-4 touches a game.
*As a co #1 or #2 running back in 2013, he was still looking at limited touches for a guy of his caliber.
*Despite his talents, AG does not really fit the mold for a B1G running back. He would be better off in the Big XII.
*The coaches have indicated that they really like Marrow, including his ability as a deep back. More competition for AG.

Add it all up, and I think AG could picture an un-fulfilling career at Nebraska. Transfer to the right school in the Big XII and he could still have a nice situation.

This opens up AG for criticism about being a competitor, but it is also a lesson for the coaches. While college football is basically a meritocracy, it's foolish to think that you don't need some player management skills as coaches. As fans, a lot of us questioned the over-use of Rex Burkhead in 2011 at the expense of getting AA and AG more touches. I think that scenario played into his decision.

Heard likely goes back to RB. Roller coaster ride for him, but he should be able to get right back in the race. The recruitment of Imani Cross and the coaches liking Marrow as a deep back may be indicators of what the coaches are really looking for at RB for B1G play. Depending on who's out there, the door opens for a high caliber RB recruit this year, even if it wasn't high on the list before.

Heard's future at NU and in the NFL is as a DB. He excels there, and he can gain all-conference honors by applying himself to where his natural football talent lies.

Mike Marrow and Imani Cross can more than fit the bill to back up Rex this year. NU will recruit 2 RB's in the class. NU identified over 40 walk-on's this year felt ~20 could contribute, offered each and everyone of them accepted. This is probably the best walk-on class NU has had in recent history. I forget the 3-star RB in this class, plus Jordan Nelson who was the top RB in NE last year.

The cupboard is certainly not bare. For those of you that want to blame Taylor and the coaches, get a life.

  • Not horribly surprising, but hate to see him go. I do wish him all the best in the Big XII. Really wish he would have given 2012 a shot first.
