Favorite Football Movie

  • What is your favorite football movie?

It can be serious and heart-wrenching like "Brian's Song".

Funny like "Necessary Roughness" or "The Longest Yard".

    Childishly entertaining like "Little Giants".

Based upon a true story like "Friday Night Lights" or "Remember The Titans".

Or simply just a movie you like for no particular reason at all like "The Program" or "Varsity Blues".

Personally, my favorite is "Remember The Titans". Takes you back to a time and place that was real and how the human spirit and camaraderie of football (and sports) can overcome great odds and poor influences that surround a 'team'. (I have included my favorite clip of the movie.)

In this film, directed by Ted Kotcheff (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz), the National Football League is revealed to be more about the money than the game. Nick Nolte is North Dallas Bulls pass-catcher Phillip Elliott, whose cynicism and independent spirit is looked upon as troublesome by team coaches Johnson (Charles Durning) and Strothers (G.D. Elliot, at the end of his career and wise to the way players are bought and sold like cattle, goes through the games pumped up on painkillers conveniently provided by the management. When the Bulls management benches Elliot after manipulating him to help train a fellow teammate, Elliot has to decide whether there is more to life than the game that he loves. All the Right Moves Trailer

This was one of the first movie trailers I was hired to voice (I had done Fast Times at Ridgemont High several months before). Moves was a 1983 release. Tom Cruise had been in Taps in '81 and then shot The Outsiders, Losin' it, this film and Risky Business in '82/83. Pretty much the year that launced his career. Do I sound young? Like a KID :-) Voice Over: Joe Cipriano

NIGEL GRUFF SECOND FIELD GOAL-THE REPLACEM...

:::Join The New Rhys Ifans' Page on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rhys-Ifans/245298895570195 ::::: Nigel Gruff #3 (K) (Rhys Ifans) — A Welsh footballer (soccer player) and pub owner, nicknamed "The Leg" because he can kick a soccer ball the entire length of the playing field. He also has a tendency to smoke on the field and has a crippling gambling addiction. --- The 1987 National Football League players' strike inspired this sports-themed comedy. The Washington Sentinels are one of the strongest teams in pro football -- until contract negotiations break down and the Sentinels go on strike. Determined to play the team's schedule, owner Edward O'Neil (Jack Warden) recruits a ragtag band of scab players, to be headed up and whipped into shape by the retired veteran coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman). At the top of the recruitment list is quarterback Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a promising athlete until a catastrophic defeat in the Sugar Bowl dashed his confidence. Joining Falco on the team are Clifford Franklin (Orlando Jones), a receiver who can't catch the ball; Nigel Gruff (Rhys Ifans), a chain-smoking Welsh soccer player; Bateman (Jon Favreau), a former cop with anger management problems; Fumiko (Ace Yonamine), a sumo wrestler new to football; and Wilkinson (Michael Jace), a convict on parole to the Sentinels. Can McGinty mold his new squad of misfits and no-hopers (who truly love the game) into a winning team? Brooke Langton plays Annabelle, head of the Sentinels' cheerleading squad (who has to contend with replacements of her own), and football commentators John Madden and Pat Summerall appear as themselves. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

  • Coach Boone: Now I may be a mean cuss. But I'm the same mean cuss with everybody out there on that football field. The world don't give a damn about how sensitive these kids are, especially the young black kids.

You ain't doin' these kids a favor by patronizing them. You crippling them; You crippling them for life.

I picked this quote because the 2nd paragraph is so relevant in todays world of college sports.
Make sure they remember the day they played Nebraska! GBR
