FYI - Class Rankings

  • Current rank of the 2013 class according to 247, Rivals, and Scout

    247 - 21st
    Rivals - 14th
    Scout - 10th

The usual disparity of opinion, but nice to see the Huskers cracked somebody's top ten.

how does that make sense if all the other sites have us much higher?... unless ESPN really hates our class to bring the average down.

  • Because the composite has to be manually updated to relect the averages, which is outdated currently.

  • The team rank for 247Sports is likely slightly higher than the 247Composite team rank in part because the 247Sports rating for most of the prospects currently committed to Nebraska is higher than the individual composite ratings for those prospects (Eight 4-stars vs. seven, etc.). I can't speak to how all of the services calculate their team rankings, but here is more on how 247Sports calculates composite and team rankings:

    http://247sports.com/Article/247Rating-Explanation-81574

    247Composite Rating
The 247Composite Rating is a proprietary algorithm that compiles prospect "rankings" and "ratings" listed in the public domain by the major media recruiting services. It converts average industry ranks and ratings into a linear composite index capping at 1.0000, which indicates a consensus No. 1 prospect across all services.

The 247Composite Rating is the industry's most comprehensive and unbiased prospect ranking and is also used to generate 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings.

    More Details
All major media services share an equal percentage in the 247Composite Rating.

The composite index equally weights this percentage among the services that participate in a ranking for that specific prospect.

A composite strength meter, indicated by red bars, illustrates the total number of industry services that have ranked the prospect. A full strength meter indicates the prospect has been ranked by all industry services participating in the composite.

All industry services have a different philosophy on number of "stars" distributed with each class. The 247Composite Rating assigns stars based on an approximate average distribution of stars from the industry.

    ---------------

...and team ranking formula explanation (illustration located at top of team rankings page):

    The Formula
    Team Ranking Explanation

where c is a specific team's total number of commits and Rn is the 247Sports Rating of the nth-best commit times 100.
    Explanation

In order to create the most comprehensive Team Recruiting Ranking without any notion of bias, 247Sports Team Recruiting Ranking is solely based on the 247Sports Rating.

Each recruit is weighted in the rankings according to a Gaussian distribution formula (a bell curve), where a team's best recruit is worth the most points. You can think of a team's point score as being the sum of ratings of all the team's commits where the best recruit is worth 100% of his rating value, the second best recruit is worth nearly 100% of his rating value, down to the last recruit who is worth a small fraction of his rating value. This formula ensures that all commits contribute at least some value to the team's score without heavily rewarding teams that have several more commitments than others.

Readers familiar with the Gaussian distribution formula will note that we used the value 6 for σ because this is the standard deviation for total number of commits between schools over the last 5 years. This standard deviation creates a bell curve with an inflection point near the average number of players recruited per team.

Below is a graphical representation of how our formula works. You can see that the area under the curve gets smaller both as the rating for a commit decreases and as the number of total commits for a school increases. The y-axis in this graph represents the percentage weight of the score that gets applied to an overall team ranking.
