Embry. fired because of race?

  • Watching outside the lines. They are trying to turn his firing into a race card. Also that black coaches don't get second chances. I don't know about you bit i am sick of the race card being used. He was fired because he SUCKED. He will not get another shot because he SUCKED. No other reason.

  • That's ridiculous. If race were an issue, they wouldn't have hired him in the first place. He was fired because of his and his staff's record setting ineptitude. ESPN is hurting for programming if they have to stoop this low.

  • Colorado's athletic program is garbage right now... it might be the worst job in the BCS... nay... it IS the worst job in the BCS. Embree is no an awful coach but he had no resources, no commitment, no financial support and a horrible base pay for his staff. They have no commitment to football at that school. They want coaches to come in at $700,000 a year and win. Ain't gonna happen.

I disagree with the sentiment that they aren't racist because they hired him in the first place. This is why.

Racism doesn't exist as an all-pervasive force, nor does it exist at the individual level. It is a question of institutional racism. What this means is that while direct racial discrimination in the form of segregation, verbal abuse, etc., might not be common or even the norm in some parts of the country like it was even 30 years ago, the way society is structured and organized is through the group that has been the dominant political power for the duration of the country... white men. I'm not accusing anyone of being racist here. What I am saying is that it is quite suspicious how black head coaches seem to get fewer chances, fewer years... yes, Ellis Johnson (white) was fired after a year and race didn't play a role in that decision. But that doesn't mean that it didn't play here. My suspicion is that if Jon Embree were white, he'd still be head coach at CU today. I don't know if he's any good, but when you fire a coach after 2 years with the program mostly improving (results on field were bad, but the cupboard was as bare as it could possibly be).

Bottom line: Put any coach in the country at CU for 2 years and I doubt they have much more success than Embree. And if they're white, I bet they get a chance at least for year 3. Jon Embree may not have been fired for being black, but his race probably made him easier to discard and blame.

Like klein says (don't know how much he agrees with me, but I agree with his point about CU's AD), this is a near impossible place to win at the moment, and I'm close to 100% sure that race was one factor that contributed to Embree's early release.

Maybe we shouldn't be talking about this subject on this site. Way to explosive.
