I posted an article about painkiller injections in college football with the topic header of "NU and OU set standards for painkiller injections".
If you READ the article, you'd see that NU and OU are, in fact, setting the standards on limiting this dangerous practice. I felt pride about this and wanted to share it. Possibly someone read the posting topic, saw the article description, didn't read the actual piece and down voted me because they thought I was saying something bad about NU. Regardless of the explanation, it's just funny.
For what it's worth, from now on I will state in the thread every time I down vote someone. I will tell the poster why I did it. I will own it. Pardon the soapbox thread.

Welcome aboard. It encourages good content. Positive reinforcement to be a contributor versus posters just trying to stir up trouble or constantly trolling. A barometer of sorts. TOS doesn't use this otherwise about half of their members wouldn't have any stars. Once you get to 5 stars, which you will shortly as a newbie posting here, it's up to you to maintain that rating.

If used properly, the idea is to distinguish between posters and the level of their posts. At the top of the board, you can filter posts to only show posts from members at, or above, a certain star ranking.
Think of a board like Alabama's: Tons of fans, many trolling. With the ability to filter, posters who only post junk (and therefore get mostly DVs) won't show when you filter the board to only show 3* posters or better.
