Does Magic Get His Name Up On The Stadium?

  • I like tm and obviously wish him nothing but the best here and after. Even if he won the rose and a NC next year his name would not be on the walls. Am I the only one who thinks his form still looks hideous, why can't he just set his feet and throw instead of hopping around before he throws. Like I said I like the guy but have NEVER seen a qb with form like his.

  • you cannot compare 2 conference championships (if IF he wins them ) with Zac Taylor or Ecrouch.

The Big 10 sucks. It is an awful conference full of awful teams. come on.

It was hard for me but I AM WILLING TO ADMIT TAYLOR ISN'T AS AWFUL AS I THOUGHT but since i can admit my fault can't some of you at least admit that you look at him with rose colored blinders on.

We are talking about putting him on Memorial Stadium and he isn't one of the top 20 QB's in the country and don't give me statistical nonsense. I will buy statistics if all the QB's played the exact same teams

  • guys, come on. I LOVE ALL OF YOU. YOU ARE MY HUSKER BRETHEREN BUT DAMN

we barely beat NW and didn't exactly light it up against Michigan even though they were playing me at QB for over half the game.

You can't honestly think we are one of the top 15-20 in the country. As for the Rose Bowl, we had better pray Oregon don't lose or makes the NC game cuz we have zero shot at beating them

NC next year, lol. really. come on.

I want more than 9 wins a season as much as the next guy, but baby steps please.

  • Martinez has won me over. He's not pretty all the time but by golly, he takes a hit and comes back for more, plus he's my favorite team's QB. I think he's done plenty to warrant having his name & number up there. Hopefully he gets a chance to seal it with a conference title and Rose Bowl win.

Going out on a limb, but I think the general consensus is that we wait until his career is over before we even start asking questions like this.

The fact that he will likely bury every QB record in the books at Nebraska does bring up an interesting perspective however. Especially when 2 of the guys names and records that he is in the process of breaking are on that ring of honor.

The thing with Taylor is that he has started (or was slotted to start outside of injury) in every game of his career at Nebraska. That has never happened before. Most Husker QB's haven't been starters till their Junior and/or Senior seasons outside of a handful of guys.

While Taylor does have arguably the worst throwing motion of a Husker QB in the history of our program, he has improved his mechanics and completion percentage each and every year. This year he is leaps and bounds ahead of where he was last year. Who knows where he might be next year with more experience?

While his throwing motion is tough to watch, it is his decision-making and fumbling that have been his biggest weaknesses. Those problems have improved somewhat this year, and as you said, he is undeniably getting better.

Only Eric Crouch has shown the burst and ability to take it 80 yards on any given down in Nebraska football lore from the QB position. It is that electric ability that makes him what he is, and undoubtedly why Bo has held steadfast in his abilities.

Honest question, where does TMart rank right now? I think we could all put him behind Gill, Frazier, Frost, Crouch, and Tagge at this time, but where does he line up after that? After those guys we get into Brownson, Ferragamo, Humm, Steve Taylor, Gerry Gdowski and others. Is he better than those guys? I think he is better than Lord, Ganz, Zac Taylor, Joe Dailey, Mickey Joseph, Keithen McCant, Mike Grant, Travis Turner, Jeff Quinn, Tom Sorley, et al.

He still has 20 possible starts remaining in his career. That is more games than many of the guys I listed before ever started in their entire careers. There is still a lot of story to tell for TMart and his legacy at Nebraska. While it hasn't been a grand story to tell thus far, there is little doubt that bigger and better things are quite possibly on the horizon.

And by the way, I'll even admit I never thought Taylor would be as good or as effective as he has been this year. There is absolutely a lot of promise that he can and will get better. Finishing the season 6-0 with a Big 10 Championship and BCS Bowl game victory would certainly change a lot of perspective about how Taylor is viewed right now.

How about we let this thing finish out? In the 1993 Orange Bowl we looked as far and away from being competitive with the elite's of the college football world that our 60-3 run that ensued from 1993-1997 looked like pipedream at best. Not saying we will get sniffingly close to that kind of production, but things are on the improve with a lot of promising young players on the roster right now.

Solid stuff Skers. I think it is only fair to reserve judgement... good or bad... until the end of his career. Interesting thought, a top 10 or 15 of all time at the QB position. Where does he land? Is he ind the top 15 at Nebraska?

  • Been awhile since I have posted. Quite frankly I am getting sick of the TM haters. He is a good QB. He has made much better decisions this year, he has stayed healthy and most importantly he has won us games! I mean look at what Michigan is working with at their QB spot. You dont think Michigan, MSU, Wisco....etc would all take TM in a heartbeat??? You're kidding yourselves. And I dare say, he throws a decent ball. There are times when it seems he is given nanoseconds to throw before he is crushed because someone missed a block....again. Tough to make your reads and follow your progression when the center snap is at your feet...or nearly sails over your head. Or you get crushed in 1.1 seconds. I have supported him all year...and all last year. If we have someone better on the roster someone better tell Beck soon so we can get him ready to make a run at the B1G title.....exactly. And when he is done here he wont have accomplished much......he will only have shattered almost every record at the position. We took a safety...and asked him to win the Big 12 as a freshman, the B1G as a sophomore. You tell me he hasnt improved into a good QB. Give the kid a break. Glad he is our QB. Now....lets go win us a title. GBR.

Hey, look, you did good. Seriously, it was a fair question and got some pretty good replies. One thing for sure, there's room up there for Taylor's name. It's up to him. He's either got it or he doesn't.

This is an excellent, balanced analysis.

    Two Points:
    1. Almost all the QB's you have put ahead of him belong there but played on great teams with extremely mature offenses. Frazier was the ultimate fit for T.O.'s O of the 90's and Tom was truly ecstatic when he signed him. Gill was the ultimate fit for T.O.'s O of the 80's. Tagge was a good fit for Devaney's offense, but I don't think he was a great QB, he was just very solid and heady.

    2. Even if Taylor continues to improve he will never catch Tommie and Turner. They were just unbelievably good at making plays when they absolutely needed to be made. His play-making talents are most like Eric Crouch, but he hasn't reached that level of maturity and serenity yet and probably won't.

I think the apt comparison is Scott Frost half way through his junior year. In the run game they were different players in that Scott was extremely physical but not particularly quick whereas Taylor is extremely quick but not nearly as physical. I would rate them equally effective running the ball. Both had/have weird throwing motions and are not touch passers but could/can get the ball down field to open receivers At this point in his career Scott was mercurial, much like Taylor has been. He would play great for awhile and then make mistakes that cost the team dearly.

If Taylor improves at the rate that Scott did this year and next, I would say he ends up on an equal footing with Scott. I don't think he has the moxy that EC had, and I tend to think he won't make it there, but he definitely will improve, and he will finish in the top five, about where Scott Frost is.

He's going to be the all time yardage leader in NU history, by a large margin. Say we end up winning a conference title either this year or next, (or both). Do they put #3 up on the South Stadium?

I know he's a much maligned guy, but when he leaves here, he's going to be VERY high up in a lot of categories in our record books.

My initial thought would be, probably not, however if they manage a couple of Rose Bowl appearances (even with a down conference), I think you'd have to consider it.

No. Not a chance in hell. He will shatter all the records because he will have played in FAR more games than any other QB in school history, and he will have played the second half of all those games, something the QBs who's names BELONG up there can't say - because the score was so lopsided from their performance in the first half they didn't have to.

As long as we're talking about records, though, here's one I think should be considered; wins and losses. So far Taylor hasn't made it through a season with fewer losses than Tommie had in his entire career.

And for the record I am not badmouthing Tay at all. You don't have to think he's a bad QB to think he doesn't belong up on that wall. That wall is made for the select few that changed the program. The best of the best. I think Taylor's been pretty good this year, but if you put pretty good up in your ring of honor, it's not a very impressive honor.

Hell no. Is Jamal Lords name up there?

Unless you win, at least your conference, at least once, this shouldn't even be a discussion.

If we win big, at least back to back BIG titles under him, then maybe you can discuss this. Until then, hell no.
