Interesting from USA Today:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2013/01/17/the-questions-that-manti-teo-needs-to-answer/1842141/
I think the most telling question is: "Why did Te'o continue to speak of her after realizing this might have been a hoax?"
I don't believe Te'o, but just as an exercise, let's give him the benefit of the doubt: He lied about meeting her in person, overstated the extent of their relationship, never questioned her flakiness, and after he discovered it was a hoax, he didn't put a stop to the girlfriend narrative, and continued to speak about her in public. Even when spin this in the best possible way, Te'o was a naive (read: stupid), demonstrable liar.

The contradictions by ND and Manti are incredible. Interesting ND will not release any of their findings of their own internal investigation.
If the ND AD knew this was a hoax & kept up the charade should the AD be fired?

Sadly, however, this pathetic tale is grabbing more national attention and shame for Notre Dame than them being responsible for a real world death.
This whole Manti ordeal is like Kindergarten make believe compared to the student manager plunging to his death. Pretty sick and twisted world we live in when this story blows away that of an actual person losing their life.

I understand not bringing this out before the BCS game -- that would have created a circus and ultimate distraction -- especially if they believe their guy was actually duped and innocent in the whole matter. It would have taken the focus off the football game and put it on a sideshow.
There are lots of questions but I am not interested in getting out in front of this on either side -- hating Te'o and calling him a liar or saying he was an innocent, naive young man that was too embarrassed to admit it.

no need to bring it out before the BCS game... but why allow a special be run about it? Deny the special, tell ESPN that it's a distraction and you don't want to run it. Then you come out with it the day after the game. There's no reason to allow Teo to continue to answer questions or even create fame from the story. Don't allow the special to be run, doesn't mean you have to come clean about the whole thing right away, just don't perpetuate it further.
They added to the distraction by allowing that special to be run, especially if they knew the truth. ND and the Teo's are not innocent in this, even if they were duped.

I am not suggesting they are innocent, especially after becoming aware of the hoax. But I can imagine it was an awkward situation that was ultimately handled poorly but their handling of it didn't do an iota of damage to anyone. That doesn't excuse it or make it right but I also am not going to crucify a young man who didn't want to readily and publicly admit that he had been duped about an online girlfriend. That would be very embarrassing. He didn't see the Deadspin article coming.

true, the only damage is to himself, which is why it would have been better for him to come out with it earlier. The cover up is always worse than the crime (if this is even a crime
). The real issue for me is the fact that media has bitten so hard on it while the death of a student manager was reported once or twice and then ultimately dropped.

I am not sure what more you would want from the story about the student manager that died when the podium he was on filling practice collapsed. It was a horrible accident, it sounds like. Coaches were potentially negligent in having the kid up there in those weather conditions. Why would the media beat that story to death? It is a sad, unfortunate event but I don't think it is a national media story that a kid died from a podium collapsing from gusty wind.
I don't know, sounds like ND bashing for the sake of ND bashing. Maybe I am missing something (a lot) from the story. Was there a history of this podium collapsing on windy days but the kids were forced on there anyway? I am honestly not sure what more about this story could be written or done.

Pretty sad this gets more coverage then the student who fell to his death while being told film practice. I guarantee they have investigated this more then they did the young woman who committed suicide after reporting being raped by a member of the football team. I have never liked Notre Dame on the fact they think they are above every university in the country. These stories are proof they still do. Even the statement they put out today contradicts their actions.
