Crazy Manti Te'o story on Deadspin

    I thought the story was that he met her after the Stanford-Notre Dame game a while ago.

    Nov. 28, 2009: Te'o and Kekua meet after Stanford's 45-38 victory over Notre Dame in Palo Alto, according to the South Bend Tribune: "Their stares got pleasantly tangled, then Manti Te'o extended his hand to the stranger with a warm smile and soulful eyes." Kekua, a Stanford student, swaps phone numbers with Te'o.

    When stuff hits the fan, you have to own it immediately. Lying only makes it worse (see: Armstrong, Lance).

    especially since this will become a federal case because of identify theft, and the donations made in her name, etc... they will get ahold of his phone records, they will find the number he was "talking to" and they will find the person he was talking to... and that is IF he is telling the truth.

    I called the response as soon as I read the story -- pin it on the friend who knew the girl with the pictures. His story would be believable if, by his own account, he hadn't met her or talked to her on the phone for hours. Neither of those have to do with some fake Twitter accounts, supposedly masterminded by his good family friend. Even his father, at one point, claimed to have met the girl. This is pure craziness.

    It's funny, but sadly, the scam succeeded. A linebacker, whose only noteworthy stat was interceptions, was second in Heisman voting. Even for a down year, that's crazy. And what was his "Heisman moment"? Playing the game of his life against a 6-6 team right after his fake girlfriend fake died. What a sham.

    As if there weren't enough reasons to hate Notre Dame football already...

    No media outlet ever checked into this story at all! CBS even QUOTED(!!!) her. Freaking Deadspin scoops this four months after the fact. National sports journalism -- 247 excepted -- must be in a bad place.

    In that case, it's funny that his best lie is "yeah, I was lying before." Bold prediction: "Yeah, uh, I was just embarrassed that I, a grown man, had a girlfriend whom I'd never met. I made up some stuff about meeting her in person. We actually only communicated telephonically and electronically."

    That, or he'll claim that he was never actually quoted as saying they met in person, and that the reports about in-person meetings were either misunderstandings/misrepresentations/somehow otherwise false.

  • They had him on the sidelines of a Notre Dame-Kentucky game over the holidays and they did this whole bit where he sat down with the announcers at halftime and Dick Vitale was just fawning all over him and being a general idiot, as usual. Teo is definitely not the sharpest stick in the bundle, that was pretty obvious. Vitale and Teo were a bit like watching Laurel and Hardy trying to be taken seriously. I hope that is not too dated of a reference for some of you younger guys. It was pathetic.

  • This just confirms the disregard I've held for Notre Lame, all of the fawning attention heaped upon the program, Te'o's Heisman hype and the superfluous nature of Twitter ...all in one big package with a bow on top to make ESPN look all the fool. What a wonderful late Christmas present.

  • This story is so Juicy. I thought Twitter was gunna explode. I don't see any way He was not involved in this. First it says they met at Stanford, Now he says he never met her and he was hoaxed. Who on earth will believe he had nothing to do with it. Give me a break.

  • Time to dial up Oprah she will get to the bottom of this. Lance Armstrong first now Manti Te'o. Manti contradicts himself way to much for him not to be in on it. He is just trying to save face since the story broke by sating he was hoaxed. And people thought his draft stock dropped after the BCS Title game this sure won't help him out by any means.
