Somebody has to move, and Ankrah hasn't been great.
The coaches really like McMullen. I think they will be comfortable with Greg at SDE, and Gregory opposite.
We are young and green for a 4-3.
We are fundamental changes away away from a 3-4
LONG TERM OUTLOOK: The scheme isn't broken guys. We need to restock the cupboard. It's simple to say. We are still paying or Bo's first year of
recruitment. Over the next year, the staff will work to hide those shortcomings. It takes time to make up for recruiting mistakes when you cant get JUCO players to come in to fill in gaps. The young talent is nice, but I takes a few recruiting classes to restock the cupboard when you aren't bringing in JUCOs.
SHORT TERM: Throw the kids in the deep end. The 2012 class better be ready. That is for damn sure. We need kids to grow up.

Generally agree here
I don't think the scheme is broken...but it needs to be altered though.
It may be simplified temporarily. Until the cupboard is full and we have experience at critical positions
By the way....,
how many snaps did our defense take while playing a 4-3? Or was it a Peso? Or Nickel? Or straight up full Dime?
What was our percentage of 3 man vs. 4 man fronts?
Honestly. How many snaps did our defense actually play a 4-3 last year? 10%? 15%?
Obviously playing Devils Advocate, but it amuses to me to see people get so enamored with whether we play a 4-3 or 3-4 as our 'base' when our 'base' sees the field about 30% of the time.
they played a 4-3 every snap. When it looked like a 3-4 it was still a 4-3.
Yep. We played zero 3 man fronts last year. And in fact, we never played Nickel or Dime. Fisher and Whaley were on the field for every defensive snap last year as we strictly ran a 4-3 defense like it was nobodies business.
Thanks for the clarification.
4-3 and 3-4 are different conceptually. Without getting into to a John madden breakdown, I think this is what Klien was getting at.
We may have used 3 linemen at times last year, and the linebacker who replaced the 4th lineman would still carry out and play with the same principles as the lineman he was replacing. It's my belief these are just personnel changes and not conceptual changes.
These principles can be different than 3-4 principles.
I started to read this and it seems to be on the right track to breaking it down. Read the link.
How do 4-3 defenses stop the run? Deal with the threat of a two-back, downhill running game? Why do defensive linemen love the 4-3 defense? What is a run fit? Stop by to find out.
I think we will see a committee of DL contribute. I Think Mcmullen at 6'3 280 as a Rfrsh after training table will move inside, and contribute. Valentine will be next to him. Gregory and Moss will split time out on the edge until one of them takes it. With Ankrah solidifying the other side. My question is whether or not the light goes on for Vestal, Guy, Okuyemi, Ashburn and can Randle remain healthy? The signing of the last two classes for the DL served notice to the above guys with exception to Randle. At this point those guys may be just trying to get a great degree from UNL.... and thats what it's about, so thats OK. Other schools would have forced those guys out the door. Coach Bo & Kaz have their hands full?
Every time we played a 3-4 front we were actually in Nickel or Dime... look it up. We had Eric Martin being a stand up "rover" defensive end that blitz the QB 90% of the time out of that look with Will Compton and Santos or just Compton out there as LBs and 5 DBs or 6 DBs on occasion. We never ran a true 3-4 last year.
