I am sad I missed this thread
We should have closed better on some prospects we already had, and found more talent, not reaches. I think the coaches thought like most of the posters on the other board. Lets go after top talent, since we have a small class. Lets lay all of our eggs in the same basket. When you play soft and not that good at closing you are going to get burned. We should always go after top talent and get a lot of them. But we should always have a plan B. SInce the coaches thought the class size would be smaller than what it really could have been, they didn't have a plan B. Now, don't get me wrong we signed some good players, but just like Solich, Not enough of them.
We were at 84 for the year.
We entered fall camp with 82. We gave 4 walk-ons spots. Then CJ didnt make it and Bubba went MLB.
84. Lost Ward, Okafor, Kerr and Williams postseason. Down to 80. Graduated 14. Down to 66. Signed 17. Leaves us at 83

Alright, that is what I was thinking.
Would be very painful if we have a guy or 2 not make it to campus in August.
'Bama probably has to cut about a dozen guys to get down to 85 by fall camp.
FWIW, I wasn't aware of K. Cooper and didn't take into account of J. Williams being booted.
...It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.
W. C. Fields
I dont think Cooper is official yet or was being accounted for.
We could've signed 21 before the Williams info was public.
Atleast a dozen. They have taken 25 guys each of the last 4 years... It's a numbers game, and we dont have the numbers
Yep. Plus we aren't done with attrition yet. There will be another 3-4 players minimum by the fall that will be gone for one reason or another.
Well at least we will fill with all the walk-ons. Because, you know, that was Bo's plan all along.
This class did not pan out like it was designed. Plain and simple.
That isn't to say I don't like most the guys we got.
Oath Before Orders
Are you kidding me Daddy - Can you honestly say without Big Red Kool-Aid stains on your face that the tight-end positition is in good hands after this this year ?? We will have Sutton along with another of the Cotton prodigy to man the position. Do you honestly think that either of them is up to All Conference material ???? I am so tired of your insistent sunshine pumping...... And you think that Moore will all a sudden be an anchor on the blind side..... Clowney made him look like a fool and they were both true frosh.....
I will say it wasn't our coaches fault, we didn't get bush loo, even though I thought he was a reach. The coaches over at that school wouldn't let our coaches get close to him.
A particular reason?
If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.
I have no idea, and neither do you.
I don't really give a chit if you're tired of my sunshine pumping.
I'm sick and tired of the negative nellies who find every way possible to slam this staff and the Head Coach .
Every friggin' time I write a sunshine pumping post is in direct response to more of your/their negative crap.
Stop posting negative crap and I won't have a reason to pump sunshine.
And you, in particular, can kiss my rosy red --------.
Here's what we know about the tight end position for 2013.
We only have 2 scholarship players on the roster NOW that are slated to be here. One of them hasn't gone through a practice yet. The other has been nothing more than a scout team guy. The rest are walk-ons who also haven't done anything of significance yet. Long has a handful of snaps, and that might be overestimating it.
Could some of these guys be good? Absolutely. In fact, I like Sutton...a lot. I also like Cotton's bloodlines. But that doesn't change the fact that there is little depth and the depth we do have is very very young and absolutely unproven at this point in time.
It's not slamming the coach, it's point out the obvious. And you can be real naive and narrow minded if you choose and call me a negative nellie. Of course, by doing it, you are choosing to ignore the positive things I said about the class as well.
Try as he might, DA is simply incapable of handling an opposing argument. Without fail, it descends into name calling and blanket assertions of negativity.
Anyone who tries to pretend there aren't things to seriously question or critique about the program at this point can't see the forest through the trees. The people who want to voice those opinions are just as entitled to say so as anyone wants to take the overly positive tack.
DA makes many of his posts is a self righteous manner, depicting himself as the champion of truth while everyone else is deluded. Disagree with him, and the insults start to fly. He claims he's tired of "negative nellies", but his own rose colored views would portray Nebraska and a few of it's players as BCS title material, when it's obvious to any impartial observer that's not the case. We're a 2nd tier program right now, and there is going to be a fair amount of criticism involved with that. DA seems unable to accept that.
Life goes on...
Meanwhile, this recruiting class measured out at an Average Star rating right around 3.3 per player. This is the same average player rating as Bill Callahan had with that class back in his 2nd year that was rated among the best in the country. He just signed a dozen more players. That we could only take about 20 players is a matter of logistics, but in terms of talent infusion, we are doing fine.
Had this been a year where we could have taken 28 guys, and maintained the same talent level, people would be raving about the class. You can't let the size of this class be the dominant concern. That will even itself out in time.
this class is good and there are hopefully a couple of studs in it. I have high hopes for Tommy Armstrong, his name is ARM STRONG that has to be a good sign right?
but i have to admit losing out on top recruits year after year is getting a little disheartening. to me it reflects a flaw somewhere. i realize that Nebraska isn't next to the ocean and 75º all year but we should still get some top tier recruits most years right?
"Around the country, Nebraska is still a respected name but gets criticized for being a little old and moldy". OWH
this perception has got to change.
“Patience, n. A minor form of despair, disguised as a virtue.”
I have to agree to a point with you. I think this is Pelini's best class to date but I too am disappointed we couldn't close on two or three of these guys. I think we have some major holes on our staff as far as recruitiing goes, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Let's face it, if you are an O-lineman what would make you want to come here and play. Our offense is not suited for taking the next step to the NFL nor is BC a quality O-line coach. When is the last time you have heard his name mentioned as far as recruiting. It is huge for these kids to be able to be recruited by their position coach.
Funny you should dump on Barney for one of his best attributes: he's a good recruiter. Garrison is a good hire and relates very well to the OL on and off the field. He's also becoming a very good recruiter. Things are going in the right direction. Keep the faith.
Yeah, the closing part didn't work out with some guys. We can only speculate why some of those guys didn't make it here. It would be interesting to know their decision making.
I agree, on the surface it can appear it was an all-or-nothing approach and no plan B. Maybe they did not see the quality and character in other guys after their targets and, therefore, didn't offer other players just to pass out schollies.
When the best recruits in the country go to other schools that's not "going in the right direction". IMO. When your head coach is already making excuses like how cruddy the airport situation is and it affects recruiting then I 'm not sure how you "keep the faith" but party on.
i hope you're right and i'm wrong. and it wouldn't be the firs time i was completely off base so feel free to take my comments with a grain of salt.

Not trying to discredit your opinion at all, just curious as to why you say this year's class is better than last year's class? There were some misses last year, yes, but not as glaring or wide-spread as this year, imo. With the OL, DT and skill positions brought in last year, I think this class has a hard time measuring up to that one.
The coaches wanted him to go to the U of Hawaiii
Can't argue with that, although I seem to recall a whole bunch of fans who castigated the staff for the recruitment of both Ben and Jake. Both of whom have more than proved their capabilities.
why dismiss players because they're young? A lot of fans seem to think we should be playing more young players.
Just because a kid is young doesn't mean they can't contribute. How many actually expected Reed to emerge the way he did in 2010?
