Anybody else find it strange that a co-defensive coordinator is in the middle of all of these discussions and being like...I don't know, a spokesman for Mooney?
Where did that come from anyway, that Heard couldn't block and Ameer is the best at it so that is why he gets all the carries?
Not vouching for Waterfowl's comment, but I don't see how it's contradictory to the Heard situation.
I understand your speculating here, I think, but if you were right it sounds to me like the staff has no idea what they want to do with him. While they were trying to figure it out by bouncing him around, they lost him.
I have no idea because he hasn't been given the chance to even carry the ball a hanful of times a game, but what do you see or not see that shows he could not be a 25 carry a game guy?
It's hard as a fan to comment on that one way or the other. We just don't see what the coaches see. I liked what I saw when Heard ran. He always ran hard, had good vision and could go from 0-60 in no time. But that's all during limitted action in a game. I haven't even been able to really see him in a spring game. I know the coaches aren't perfect, but they have reasons for why they do things. I think they wanted to get him on the field without taking Abdullah off it.
I saw a tweet (I can't find it now) by someone today saying that coaches confirmed that they asked Heard to take SOME reps at WR. Honestly, I'm not entirely sold that this situation is over. He might come back into the fold... chances are he doesn't, but the fact that nobody on the Nerbaska coaching staff has said anything to confirm this is interesting. Let's hope it's a mis-understanding.
One thing I always thought they could do with Heard is have him return kick-offs.
Heard isn't leaving because he doesn't like Nebraska anymore, he is leaving because of Playing time, and switching positions. How is that not contradictory.
Wasn't Waterfowl's comment that he was told he would get limited PT last year and was recommended to redshirt? That's totally in-line with being upset about not getting PT.
Again, I can't vouch for the accuracy of that story -- I have no inside info -- but it's not contradictory to what sources have said re: Heard.
I agree with all of this. I never understood why Heard didn't return kicks. Especially when Ameer was taking the majority of the load at RB.

He said he got Limited playing time, because of an injury. Heard must have not thought he wasn't injured(or injured enough) for Limited playing time.

Probably from the fact that when he was in a game, he was never asked to block or carry on any other function. When he was in the game, he got the ball unless Martinez changed the play. That points to a guy who isn't being counted on for much else.
I like Heard a lot and envisioned an offense where both he and Abdullah could be on the field at the same time. From the sounds of things, this would have facilitated that concept. Lots of team feature guys running from slot/WR positions via motion or shifts. Beck's plan may have been for this to happen. Don't know.
Braylon evidently thought he deserved #1 RB reps, but it's pretty hard to argue that he would have been better than AA was in 2012 or would be in 2013. With Rex gone, his role was very likely to increase this year. That's why this seems like an ill fated decision.
Rex was basically gone last year, and he got maybe 5% of the reps. Doubt he would have gotten more this year.
Heard would have been smart to RS. Personally, I thought the best move for him would have been stay at DB and redshirt. He obviously chose differently. At heart, he is a RB.
IF he was upset by the suggestion of another position change to get him on the field, then the writin was on the wall. It's not hard to see. A transfer may have been on his mind even before this.
It's clear he feels he deserves a chance to be a true contributor. We all know that didn't happen this year. It's not surprising he'd consider a transfer.
Teein' Off on Links
article says he thought about transfering last year when asked to move to CB. Let's not forget that Ohio State recruited him as a CB, we told him we were recruiting him as a RB.
If the problem was pass blocking as has been mentioned then playing time may not have increased unless that was solved.
Do we have any former college players on the board - doesn't seem like learning how to pass protect should be that difficult but I'd be curious if anyone has some perspective on that. -- I know that I've heard it has kept RBs from getting anything but spot playing time at both the pro and college level though.
Maybe not, but Ron Brown is on the record about over-working AA during Rex's absence. Think that would have improved for things for BH this year.
Anyway, I think the position "change" is being mis-construed. I think it was more about BH operating out of 2 positions, not just 1, thus giving him more chances to be on the field.
There -- you just came up with a plausible scenario in which the rumor and Heard's (indirect) statements don't contradict: Heard was upset because he thought he wasn't injured enough to be limited. The very fact that you could envision this scenario is proof that the stories aren't contradictory.
Truth is another matter. They might not be true -- I have no idea -- but they are definitely not contradictory. That is all I was saying.

Agree, hard to know.
I dont see Heard as a liar, I have to accept the article saying the staff asked him to switch. The coaches will never share that convo anyways.
You might be right that it's not over, but it appears that way. Seems like Heard is mentally done going back to last year.
Ya but he would have been the only RB that year. He really hurt himself not qualifying that year. .

This is an underrated point. Had he qualified he wouldn't have been one of three true freshmen. Something to think about.
