Coaches Pay

  • If...and I know we have a few games left...we win the Big 10 and go to the Rose Bowl and win that game do you think we give Bo a BIG pay increase along with Beck? Either way Beck needs to get a bump. When you compare the pay to others in the Big 10 we are in the middle. I'm a big believer in taking care of your guys so there is no reason to "look" else where.

    Thoughts?

I agree, Bo has proven (at least to me) he is worthy of a pay raise. He's now with Oregon and Alabama in winning 9+ games the last 5 years. I don't care what you say about Bo's shortcomings, that's impressive. Now, I still think he has something to prove though and there are a number of areas I would like to see him improve. Winning the B1G this year and getting a BCS game is pretty big, even with an ineligible OSU team.

Yeah, Beck should probably get a bump up in pay. I think his next move is to a HC position, but no reason to encourage people to come sniffing around.

9 wins with the most difficult schedule in the Big Ten this year. Only MSU is close and they didn't have to play Penn St. Here are the records of the teams NU has played in the Big Ten:

    Michigan 8-3
    Northwestern 8-3
    Minnesota 6-5
    Michigan State 5-6
    Iowa 4-7
    Ohio State 11-0
    Penn State 7-4
    Wisconsin 7-4

If Michigan St wins on Saturday at Minnesota we will have played one team in conference with a losing record for the season. Alabama, for example has played Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, and Auburn in conference play. All of which will have losing records at the end of the season. Two of them have managed to lose every SEC game they have played this year.

I'm not saying that Nebraska is better then Alabama, just that we have played a more competitive schedule.

  • More competitive simply looking at wins and losses, but I don't think that's a fair assessment of strength of schedule. If Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois played in the SEC this year, I don't see them winning a game.

  • No. He received an upgrade once already and I am not convinced it was warranted, but I understood TO's rationale for putting the job's pay scale in the ball park of the upper level jobs in the Big Ten.

In the scenario you presented I assume Bo will receive bonuses for making the championship game, winning it, making the Rose and then winning that. If not four bonuses, then at least two.

I think a raise would be warranted if he has a similar or better year next season. You can't, nor shouldn't give a raise for every single accomplishment; that's what bonuses are for.

I could see Beck receiving an upgrade after the season, but I too would wait for the outcome of next season.

We didn't play Indiana and Illinois though and Auburn, Tennessee, and Kentucky are terrible and I think they are comparable. They could be in the Big Ten this year and they wouldn't win any conference games. The SEC is great at the top, but at the bottom they are not good.

I would argue that the Big Ten doesn't have any great teams this year, but a lot of good teams.

Alabama has only had to beat five teams with winning records this year: Michigan, Western Kentucky, Mississippi St., LSU and Texas A&M. They have only played two teams who have offenses in the top 50 (and one of those teams beat them).

The SEC might win the National Championship, but top to bottom, I don't think they have the best conference. Their bottom is too weak. It is very easy to argue that the rankings are skewed because every win in the SEC is considered a quality win, hence teams like Mississippi St.

I linked the record of Mississippi St. who are currently ranked in the top 25. The only teams they have beaten with a winning record are Jackson St and Middle Tennessee. But that is still considered a quality win for Texas A&M, LSU and Alabama because they were severely over-ranked because they played in the SEC.

Mississippi St. cumulative opposition are 47 and 52. Nebraska on the other hand, 66 and 40 (with 22.5% of those loses coming from NU). Sure, the eye test is important, but so is win/loss record. A team that is used to winning is going to want to keep winning.

Everyone needs to stop drinking the SEC water.
