Clearing up the quarterback picture

At this point they are into the 2nd & more likely 3rd tier QBs. We can hope they find someone who blows up during their senior year. Let's hope the D side is a homerun class.

It sucks bc QBs seem to commit early & the offensive classes are built around them. Mos def a significant set back for the offensive's class this year. They will find someone though...

Maybe it would be a good idea to hire a great QB coach & reduce the oline staff to one coach & Stai vs. two plus Stai...?

Garrison is a great recruiter though... can't eliminate him from the coaching equation.

    klein12

  • Taylor was not coachable early, he went off natural ability.

He still isnt really coachable. I would rather see Brown back at TE or Beck wuth a real QB coach.

I agree & feel that he is proving himself. Maybe move Barn to a cushy AD job...?

I have a horrible feeling were just bottom feeding for leftover scraps of QB's.

Oh, for Pete's sake! Yes, we struck out on the top of our board. That doesn't mean there aren't any other good QBs out there to get. Besides it's early. These kids change their minds all the time.

  • Any chance we keep recruiting Bailey anyway and see if we can change his mind? LONG time till next February!!!

Is Beck's track record really that extensive? The only QB I can think of associated with Coach Beck is Todd Reesing at Kansas now 5 years ago.

And all the reactionaries start popping up.

I thnk we probably spend most of our efforts trying to get Malik Zaire to change his mind.

  • Now Beck can't coach, Bo can't recruit, and Martinez refused to be coached. None of which are anything but petulant conjecture.

Before joining the Jayhawks, Beck was one of the most respected high school coaches in the state of Texas, serving three seasons at Summit High in Mansfield. He was the 2003 District Coach of the Year, and a year later, Summit High advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs with a 9-4 record. The Jaguars finished the season with the top-ranked defense in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area under Beck's leadership.

Beck was the head coach at R.L. Turner High in Carrollton, Texas, from 1999 to 2001, leading the school to back-to-back playoff appearances and consecutive winning seasons for the first time in 25 years. Beck was named the district coach of the year in 2000.

Prior to coaching in the Texas high school ranks, Beck worked at Missouri State for three seasons from 1996 to 1998, including one season as the offensive coordinator. In 1998, the MSU offense racked up 4,542 total yards-the fourth-best single-season mark in school history.

Beck was hired at Missouri State after leading Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., to the 1995 4A state championship - the first state championship in the school's 30-year history. Beck was named the regional coach of the year in 1994, and in his final two seasons at the school, Saguaro compiled a 23-4 record, compared to a 5-43 mark in the five seasons prior to his arrival.

The 45-year-old Beck first gained experience in the Big 12 Conference as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 1991 and 1992 under Head Coach Bill Snyder. Beck worked on the KSU staff with Carl Pelini. Previously, Beck coached the outside linebackers and punters at Illinois State in 1990, and worked in 1988 and 1989 as an assistant coach at Miramar High School.

Beck is a native of Youngstown, Ohio, and graduated from Cardinal Mooney High, the same high school that Bo and Carl Pelini attended. Beck was a standout in football, basketball and baseball at Cardinal Mooney.

That isn't an impressive resume to me however Beck is a solid position coach & recruiter.

The way I try to think about the staff is how highly coveted would a certain coach be by a top 20 program?

Beck, with his current resume, as OC probably wouldn't land an OC position with a program comparable with NU. Same is likely also true with Barn & Ehls.

    Oh, brother!

Beck can coach. Is he a big time OC? No. He is an up and comer. Is that acceptable at a program like NU? To some yes, to others no.

I think it is pretty elementary that he is an up & coming OC with an unproven track record at that position.

Same thing with Ehls, Pap, & Garrison. They are up & comers without extended track records. Barn is an average coach & good recruiter. He would not be hired by an institution that would be considered a peer of NU. Ron is a solid coach & niche recruiter. Bo is a coordinator who is cutting his teeth at NU. Terry seems to have some recruiting skills & has went up against the big boys.

It is a green staff in reality.

We should give TM credit for seeking out a good QB coach that would help him grow into a better QB and player. That says volumes about TM and his desire to improve. No doubt that it cost TM/family a good deal of money for the personal coaching.clap

If you don't think that is an impressive resume, then I have nothing more I can think or care to say. This is Nebraska. Nebraska has NEVER hired the type of coach you dream of.

I really cannot understand where this fan arrogance comes from. NU has never made glamor hires. They've not had the situation, culture or desire to do so. Since none can change that... deadhorse...isn't going to do anything but build whiner status. The other option is to just deal with it. Add more than what you diminish, and maybe you can actually act happy about following Nebraska football.

The general culture of this board, and why it has become so popular is that we maintain a little lighter, happier, respectful nature about the team, the program and each other. That makes it an enjoyable experience to come on here and engage. As long as HI remains that way it will continue to be a model for others to follow.

What is not enjoyable is to have to wade through grumpy complaints that diminish and demean just about everything imaginable about the Husker coaches and Taylor.

Play a positive role; don't be a troll...that somewhat sums it up. JMHO

    Oh, brother!

DA, no one is saying that Beck can't coach. All I'm saying is that Beck has such a huge job/responsibilty as the OC that he doesn't have the same amount of time that a QB position coach would have with the QB's. That is not a put down on Beck, he already has his hands full. Hiring a good QB that can spend a lot of time with our QB's would be instrumental and a no-brainer.

Bo is growing into a good recruiter and will only get better.

It doesn't matter what NU has done in the past it is a new day...things are vastly different now. Are we paying for this kind of staff? Seems pricey.

Don't worry I will readjust my expectations to a fringe top 25 team. Shout me down & insult me so that I will pump unrealistic sunshine. Now I'm a troll? biggrin

I'd say whiffing on our top four QB targets is pretty significant. Especially considering they were all the type of QB that fit the mold Beck likes to run his system. The kid we're recruiting from California(I believe) isn't exactly the dual threat type. I'm not saying he doesn't have a chance to be a great college QB, but he doesn't exactly excite Beck with his ability to use his feet.

Please explain where I've shouted you down or insulted you. If so, I apologize.

What I don't understand is such hyperbole. In order to add and engage in a manner that doesn't demean, you have to "pump sunshine"? That is a straw man argument. I'm surprised you'd try to use that tactic.

Of course you misinterpreted troll for droll. biggrin
