Following Aaron Bailey's surprising commitment to Illinois, where does Nebraska look next for its quarterback?

  • I am stunned about Bailey... but you know what? Good for him.

I think that I would like to see us(Nebraska) take Brayden Scott if the kid loves Nebraska and really WANTS to be here. I don't know why, but I like that kid and have a good felling about him. I don't know exactly where the kid stands, but if he is a Husker at heart and would be devoted to the Big Red, I would give the kid an offer if it were up to me. But of course it's not. Good luck to young Mr. Bailey and we will see you in a couple years hopefully to reintroduce you to Memorial Stadium and our beautiful field turf...

  • Could it be the reason we have missed on so many QBs so far is because they feel that NU doesn't have a QB position coach that can concentrate on developing our own QB's? As the OC, Beck doesn't really have a lot of time to spend developing QB's the way they should be developed because he has a hugh amount of responsibilities working as OC. Maybe I'm wrong on this but we have to find a way to get recruits like Bailey to commit to NU.

  • I don't see Boeing Brown as a serious candidate. I agree, Cogswell is an "intriguing" prospect. Big arm, good release and spin on the ball, big physical runner with surprising quick feet, kid looks perfect for a WCO, not sure how effective he'd be running the option...but he's quick enough and tough enough to run when he needs to.

Vercher looks better than most of the rest for what Beck wants. Unless Cogswell is just a big Todd Reesing.

Beck is the QB Coach as well as the OC. He has developed and help develop a lot of very good QB's. He's won Championships and Awards at every level as he's climbed the ladder of success.

Bailey even shocked his H.S. coach with his commitment to Illinois. You can hardly pin anything negative on the Husker coaches.

Is Beck's track record really that extensive? The only QB I can think of associated with Coach Beck is Todd Reesing at Kansas now 5 years ago.

Todd Reesing is the only QB I know of that thrived under Coach beck... I CAN tell you that he achieved the 4th most yards in school history as OC at Missouri State and won multiple awards as a HC at the high school level. You are very aware of his success at Kansas so I won't rehash that.

Before joining the Jayhawks, Beck was one of the most respected high school coaches in the state of Texas, serving three seasons at Summit High in Mansfield. He was the 2003 District Coach of the Year, and a year later, Summit High advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs with a 9-4 record. The Jaguars finished the season with the top-ranked defense in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area under Beck's leadership.

Beck was the head coach at R.L. Turner High in Carrollton, Texas, from 1999 to 2001, leading the school to back-to-back playoff appearances and consecutive winning seasons for the first time in 25 years. Beck was named the district coach of the year in 2000.

Prior to coaching in the Texas high school ranks, Beck worked at Missouri State for three seasons from 1996 to 1998, including one season as the offensive coordinator. In 1998, the MSU offense racked up 4,542 total yards-the fourth-best single-season mark in school history.

Beck was hired at Missouri State after leading Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., to the 1995 4A state championship - the first state championship in the school's 30-year history. Beck was named the regional coach of the year in 1994, and in his final two seasons at the school, Saguaro compiled a 23-4 record, compared to a 5-43 mark in the five seasons prior to his arrival.

The 45-year-old Beck first gained experience in the Big 12 Conference as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 1991 and 1992 under Head Coach Bill Snyder. Beck worked on the KSU staff with Carl Pelini. Previously, Beck coached the outside linebackers and punters at Illinois State in 1990, and worked in 1988 and 1989 as an assistant coach at Miramar High School.

Beck is a native of Youngstown, Ohio, and graduated from Cardinal Mooney High, the same high school that Bo and Carl Pelini attended. Beck was a standout in football, basketball and baseball at Cardinal Mooney.

Bailey went to Illinois for whatever reason, but anyone who thinks it looks like we have a good QB coach is dreaming.

Not trying to bag on Beck or Martinez, but for a starting QB to have mechanics as bad as TM 25 games into his career is NOT a good sign. Candy coat it or rationalize it all you want, but in terms of throwing mechanics and footwork, TM looks like a guy who hasn't been coached at all. We already know that the supposed "better footwork" TM had this spring was from working with a coach outside the program.

It could be that basic QB teaching was foregone to develop TM as a game manager of the offense, but he is not a player who looks like he's been coached well in QB fundamentals. Either that, or he has been coached but hasn't learned much.

As far as Bailey goes, he wasn't going to play until TM leaves anyway. Nobody we recruit is going to play until TM leaves. Besides, a lot of people seem to have swept Armstrong under the bus already. With proper development, I see him as an upgrade over TM. Other QB recruits will surface.

Not all the blame can be placed onto Beck; TM was also coached by Wats.

At this point they are into the 2nd & more likely 3rd tier QBs. We can hope they find someone who blows up during their senior year. Let's hope the D side is a homerun class.

It sucks bc QBs seem to commit early & the offensive classes are built around them. Mos def a significant set back for the offensive's class this year. They will find someone though...

Maybe it would be a good idea to hire a great QB coach & reduce the oline staff to one coach & Stai vs. two plus Stai...?

So is it lack of good qb coaching, Taylor not wanting or trying to work on his game or both?

I recall some interviews where Taylor said he had essentially a great arm & could make all the throws. Maybe he doesn't think he needs to work on it?
