    It's not.

As I said above..even if Rome is asking forgiveness a second time...the team has a reason to forgive him, His presence gives us a better chance on the field. Forgiving Rome, even if for the second, third time, can be beneficial in the grand scheme of things. You don't have to be best friends with the guy.

I have no reason to forgive you in your example.

Very, very marginally better. But not better enough to win this argument.

As SF has pointed out, we're in trouble defensively. And just about everywhere, except maybe nickle, we will be betting on the come. Thank God for 'promising' talent. And coaching. Talent + coaching is where we will hang our hat.

Fact is, we are so far away from those mid ninety defenses that we are in a whole other universe and keeping Rome wouldn't move that needle at all.

Maybe he doesn't develop. Maybe Valentine develops quicker than normal. But he was one more bullet in your gun. You just lost your most talented player returning of those that had played.

We are not better off and anyone saying we are just doesn't want to accept reality.

This isn't wide receiver where you can plug a frosh in and have him physically ready to play

Could be. Sometimes bullets hurt the wrong things. Personally, I'd rather have guys I can trust, who will develop, and bust their butts ALL the time, buy in, put team first. If all, or even 3 of the 5, could have been said about the dearly departed, I'd agree with you. Don't wish him any ill, but this could be a case of addition by subtraction.

Agree to disagree. Much different? There aren't alot of options. We will be young. We will be limited. It's way our defense will struggle alot at times next year.

As opposed to this year? I say blow it up and start over. Seriously. If we are going to stink it up (And I'm not so sure of that) let's do it with guys that are invested and will improve.

Tough to blow it up and play for the future when you look at your veteran talent offensively. All that will be gone in 2014. And you will be starting from scratch in a lot of areas there. With the schedule we have and the offense we have returning, we need to play for the present, not the future.

And I would suggest that the present, MUST include guys who fully buy in, etc. Or would you rather the future also be affected by a toxic atmosphere?

  • Look if Rome had to go, he had to go. But his loss on the field is big. Just because his presence in the locker room was detrimental does not mean it isn't still a loss on the field. We have zero... zero depth at DT right now. Not good. Failure to get JUCOs is a bigger story now because Rome couldn't get things figured out.

My argument wasnt about guys who create a toxic atmosphere. If he need to go, he needs to go. My argument was about whether or not we are better off now than we were yesterday....we aren't.

  • One defensive player out of all the seniors who played on defense last year got an invite to the NFL Combine. Stafford. If Steinkuhler would have been healthy, make it two.

Bo's not dumb. He knew he wasn't playing the most talented defensive players last year. But he doubled down on his culture and leadership and seniors and made it all the way to the fourth play of the Big Ten Championship. That ain't bad, really. But what happened to the defense after that sure as heck wasn't good.

Chase Rome wasn't on his way to a Combine invite, either. Heck, yes, his departure hurts. But if Nebraska can coach up the kids coming in, it does not have to be a fatal blow.

It's going to come down to Kaz, Bo and JP, and how well they develop those new guys in all of one month of fall camp. They have the potential. But they have to be developed.

In the meantime, Nebraska needs to look seriously at cutting whatever leftover weight there is on the defensive side of the ball, and actively court summer JUCO signees, post-grads and transfers.

Thanks for your insight Sam. These next seven months will be interesting.

Your first two sentences illustrate my contention perfectly.

Hard to say if the lose of Rome is big -- it might be but if he was the best DT we had on this roster then we have problems. I never even noticed his play. He didn't get much push and was routinely have the line of scrimmage re-set 5 yards down the field. Aaron Curry and VV need to be ready to go. Rome would have provided depth but his overall production wasn't great. We will be young inside but that isn't necessarily bad given the production our experienced guys have given.

  • At no time during his presence here did Chase Rome ever look like a legitimate DT. Ever.

He spent so much time on his back, you couldn't read his number or name through the grass stains or rubber pellets.

And people want to carry on about how much we're going to miss a guy of that caliber?

He's out because Bo knew he wasn't going to be a contributor in 2013 anyway. Maybe a body you could stick out there for a few plays, but not much else.

then why are Jay Guy and Toby Okuyemi still on the team? Chase Rome played for a reason last year. He had some bad games, especially after that OSU game, but he wasn't this aweful player people are making him out to be just because he left the program. He wasn't consistent and lacked technique and drive, but he was apparently our third best bet last season. I hope Aaron Curry and Vincent Valentine can play at a level far above being Freshmen... but we just don't know.

This is more about not filling the needs when we knew exactly what they were, than losing any guy of real import.

Bo has already conceded that AC and VV could have and would have played last year if he hadn't put red shirts on them. How much of Chase Rome do you think we would have seen under those circumstances? A lot less, IMO.

And if Bo thinks they could have played in 2012, what makes you think they won't be better prepared in 2013?

Curry and Valentine may have been real eye openers for Bo. Kids that came in as freshmen destined for red shirts but showed they were ready to play. Chances are, Bo is going to be looking at guys like Collins and Mixon in the same light for 2013. Get Randle back on two good legs and maybe he can provide some assurance. Bo portrayed him as a warrior playing on one leg last year in the presser. If he can just be solid, it would be significant. Williams may be too far gone, we'll see if he can contribute.

Long way to the fall, lots could develop. It's not out of the question that we could still bring in a JuCo kid to bolster the DT spot, although he probably wouldn't figure as a game changer.

It's going to be about youth on defense in 2013, no secret there.

BTW, Guy and Okuyemi look like non-contributors, but I doubt they are potential cancers either. Combine an under-achiever with a potential virus and you have a guy like Rome that Bo is not afraid to cut loose.

As far as I know Aaron Curry wasn't going to redshirt. He played in 5 games, all sparingly and all behind Chase Rome. I'm not saying Chase Rome was a game changer, or even that he was a solid contributer when he was out there but we had no depth before, we have less now. Counting on RS-Fr and True Freshman on the defensive line is killer. there's no reason we should be at that point, but we are.

I think the staff would be totally fine with Guy and Okuyemi leaving the program as well. Rome wasn't good but we had crap for options to as evidenced by the fact that he played so much. Our d-line was pretty terrible last year -- this year we are going to be very young on the DLine and the results may be the same but we will find out if guys can play. Rome thought he was better than what he ever showed. I wish him the best as he moves on but from a football standpoint - - I won't miss him being a nonfactor along the DLine.

If VV or Curry make me miss Rome, I will be very, very sad.
