    This is an underrated point. Had he qualified he wouldn't have been one of three true freshmen. Something to think about.

    You might be right that it's not over, but it appears that way. Seems like Heard is mentally done going back to last year.

    But Sipple might and he tweeted something along those lines a while back.

    Bottom line, we had three really talented backs in the same class. What do we expect. I would bet my life at least one transferred by now. I'm not surprised that 2 have when you consider the situation.

    It is also possible that Newby is better right now than Heard is or at least his equal. Also, reported that Cross stays late after EVERY practice to work on things. I wouldn't kick Heard out the door but I think his impact on the field won't make much difference to Nebraska.

    This really doesn't have much so do with roster management. If you can see it coming before the kids even get to campus then I can't put it on the coaches. It's what happens when you get 3 RBs in the same class.

    I always wanted Heard to play more but if Rex doesn't go down this arguement would have never happened. The fact is Heard probably got more PT this season than he expected.

    It's very possible Newby ends up better. It's very possible that his impact won't make much difference.

    But those aren't givens. Until those things come to fruition, Heard's departure is a loss.

  • To put this Heard matter in perspective, I looked at another team that runs a spread and stockpiles RB talent -- Oregon. Here is a list of scholarship RBs since 2008:

    2008
    LaMichael James - finished college career at Oregon, left early for draft
    Chris Harper - transferred to KSU
    LeGarrette Blount - JUCO, finished career at Oregon

    2009
    NONE

    2010
    Lache Seastrunk - transferred to Baylor
    Dontae Williams - not listed on roster

    2011
    Tra Carson - transferred to TAMU
    De'Anthony Thomas - listed as DB in class, but played RB as frosh

    2012
    Byron Marshall - played RB as frosh

    Since 2008, 50% of RB recruits have left the program. Despite having multiple RBs in 3/5 classes, no more than one player from each class finished (or remains) with Oregon, with the exception of 2008, when JUCO RB Blount saw out his remaining two years (though, I believe he was alone in his graduating class). I think it's also noteworthy that of the four players that have stuck around (so far), only one of them redshirted. They currently have two scholarship players listed at RB, I believe, with five other walk-ons.

    I'm not at all saying I wouldn't like Heard around or that we shouldn't be disappointed that he's leaving, but I think we have to accept that high attrition rates come with the territory. It's going to be extremely tough to keep a stable of highly talented kids, especially when there's class overlap.

    He was listed as a RB on the University of Oregon's 2008 recruiting class page, but it looks like he didn't end up playing RB. Good catch.

    There -- you just came up with a plausible scenario in which the rumor and Heard's (indirect) statements don't contradict: Heard was upset because he thought he wasn't injured enough to be limited. The very fact that you could envision this scenario is proof that the stories aren't contradictory.

    Truth is another matter. They might not be true -- I have no idea -- but they are definitely not contradictory. That is all I was saying.

    I'll just let it go. Because I think we are talking about 2 different things. Or I am not getting your point.

    Very good post - we don't seem to realize this stuff happens at many universities and is becoming more and more prevalent. Kids now, more then ever, want to start or be the man like they were in HS.

    Having said the above I'll repeat that I really like Braylon Heard as a player and as a person. I would have liked to have seen him get more playing time. But the coaches are the ones that see the practices and this isn't the first time someones playing time was curtailed because they had not mastered pass protection.

    Bottom line - if Braylon really feels he needs to move on then thats what he needs to do. And we need to let it go and stop trashing the people involved.

    Wasn't a running back though. He went into Oregon as a quarterback. He moved around from QB and WR

    As QB, he was 4 for nine (40 yds) with 1 TD and 2 ints.

    He was all over the place with rushing, passing and receiving stats. But not much in any of these.

    Yeah...but how good of a QB he was was never really a question. The point was...he wasn't a RB...that's why I mentioned it to the OP. Doesn't completely defeat his point...but it changes things a bit
