Ugh can't believe I did 2 minutes of research on this...

Do not underestimate the number of carries Roy endured last year.

Look at 2009. Roys biggest workload. 6.4 YPC the year before, 6.6 the year after, and 5.2 in 2009.
Roy also had guys around him including Rex to keep him going. We may have that this year TBD.
I do not understand how his popularity is a bad thing that is nonsesical. There is no running back controversy so your point is... well ...
There are other factors... O-Line,Offensive Style,Quarterback Play,Defensive Schemes.... I just chose an obvious one.
