Bo was hired for his Defensive mind

  • Then why are we rated high in this category every year.

I think he need to be more active on this side of the ball and let the people HE has hired do their jobs more. Do what Dr Tom hired you for and stop giving up 70 points or more every year to someone.

Dr. Tom hired him for a number of reasons including to restore stability and integrity to the program and win football games. Unlike many big time programs we aren't either on probation or hounded by the prospect of it, our kids are graduating at rates we had been accustomed to pre-Calahan, the character and citzenship on the team is exceptionally high and Bo has won 48 games. He did this in two very different conferences and after taking over a program that had good talent at some positions but was disorganized, demoralized and very undisciplined.

The defensive play, since Suh graduated but especially this year, has been sub-par in big games. This is a shock given Bo's very obvious expertise in the area. I think our front 7 had a couple of significant holes this year. More damaging was that the closest guy we had to a dominant player was Baker Steinkuhler who is a tough, solid interior lineman and very good as a run stuffer but only adequate as a pass rusher. We saw excellent results in Bo's first two years as HC and everywhere else he was a college DC including the 1 year at NU (2003?) when he had really good talent. We've had some misses in DL recruiting for sure. Without a better then average DL it is very very difficult to have a dominating Defense.

We have more athletic LBs in the program and on the way who will experience some growing pains next year but should be very good by season's end. I don't have a great deal of confidence in what we have in the front 4 for next year mainly because of youth. D Linerman tend to need more time to adapt to the college game. However some of the 2nd year players may turn out to be all-conference type players in time. Maybe expecting too much for them to be really solid next year though.

  • I think that Bo needs to decide how hard he is going to crank up recruiting and who him and his staff can realistically get. If he can't get players that can run the two gap at a high level then he needs to adjust his scheme imho. If he has the horses he can coach D that is for sure though which makes the last couple of years very frustrating.

It's good to be the King.

All this is good but where are the resolves of his hiring ? People like product not story's of how good something looks. If he's not willing to go get the so called better players for his scheme then he has to work harder with what he has period.
I love your thinking on this but show me the money.

,,just another Coach Bo bashing thread IMO! We've had about 20+ of them this season; so go figure.

Don't get me wrong i wish he had done better that what he did this season. BUT ...Coach Bo is who we think he is and he's sill our coach!!

Yep, and i feel the majority of fans realize this, seems like common sense to me anyway.

You're wrong it not bashing him at all did you even read it or are you guessing you read it.
It's about him taking over the defense like he was hired to do. I like Bo and want him to successes more then anything I just want him to bring to the table what he is suppose to be good at. Plain and simple.

    Defense wins championships. Ala Alabama.

    So you agree or disagree?

Then he needs to find assistant coaches that are better recruiters. As it sits now we are the bridesmaid with way too many of our targets.

We were ranked very high in passing defense without much of a pass rush. We lack talent on the defensive side of the ball and that falls on Pelini and I think that is being corrected via recruiting as best can be done It won't be for a lack of effort or commitment (IMO). We have suffered some embarrassing losses in which we gave up big numbers and that needs to stop.

But don't go looking to Alabama and saying "see, defense wins championships." That defense has the best CB possibily in the country and a bunch of LBs that are 230-240 and run 4.5 40s and are super athletic. They also have a NT that can bench press over 500lbs. Alabama runs a great scheme that looks even better when you are able to put in elite athletes.

    Ad nauseum

I don't want him gone I want him to be fully incharge of what he was hired for and that's defense.

Make it his full responsible if it doesn't work that week let your other coaches coach what they were hired for.

    Example:
You were hired to make that same ice cream you made at LSU and you had all the same ingredient but when you made it this time it taste like buffaloes popo but you were incharge of making that exact same ice cream. It's not someone else's fault it's nasty it's yours. Make the ice cream you have all the stuff or can get it from piggly wiggly.

I agree! Especially with what we have on the other side of the ball. Defense keeps your butt in the game...you still have to score. (2009)

he doesn't have all the same ingredients... he's starting to realize that now. Anybody who thinks Papuchis has any real control over the defense doesn't know what's going on. Pelini calls the plays, Pelini coaches the players, it's all on Pelini and he knows that. Papuchis is his under-study.

Then go shopping for what you need and stop settling for what you have.

Hit the road and sell sell sell your defense to get that talent.

One more time please but try and make sense and/or speak more clearly. What category? And how are we rated high? What side of the ball? We give up 70pts or more every year to someone? That's news to me. Please show stats backing this up.
